Hello! I have made a few posts on the board, but never properly introduced myself!

I'm a former reporter, hopeful writer, and currently a library associate. I started out with a Pilot Varsity and found the fountain pen was about the fastest way to take notes as a reporter. I begrudge that I didn't know about them in college. For years I got by on Waterman Phileases, not realizing there were other alternatives. I wore the cap out on a blue one: it closed loosely and the clip came off.

I've diversified since then, but I still love the act of writing by hand. When I was in newspaper work and typing constantly, writing fiction by hand felt like an escape: no booting, saving or computer folderol. For years I had a lousy grip, with about four fingers clutching the writing tool. The Rotring Core and Pelikano Junior helped me out of that: I wished teachers had made me use the Pelikano years ago. It makes a lot more sense than the triangle grips on pencils.

I have mostly tried pens in the $14-$40 range, but I've expanded a little. I like the look of older Sheaffers, especially with the Triumph nibs.

Hang around here and your range will expand rapidly. Welcome to FPN from another Phoenician.

Edited for spelling (as usual)

Oh, it has. I don't think I would have heard of Safaris, Heroes and a myriad of the online dealers I now frequent if not for FPN. Rhodia was just a funny orange tablet in the art supply store; Clairefontaine a mystery. I had a few old bottles of Waterman Black that came with my Phileases, though I really preferred the Florida Blue I could only find in cartridge form. Now I have a pile of Noodler's and some Waterman Ink.

I should add that I'm a user more than a collector, but I like to collect things. I just want something I can use. I have always had a powerful connection to writing instruments, even when they were just Pentel Quicker Clicker mechanical pencils.

It's nice to know there's a few Phoenix folks around.

Indeed, welcome. smile.gif

Phoenix has a lot of meaning for me, as I use to have a ton of family that lived there. I know you'll really enjoy the forum here. This is a great community.

Hopeful. Hopeful fiction writer. I have had more nonfiction-- in the form of newspaper articles-- published. I wrote once for one small magazine. A lot of the markets in Phoenix are kind of tight. Arizona Highways had a huge backlog of unpublished stuff.

But I try spinning my little stories. Some of my best moments have come in stepping away from a keyboard and writing by hand-- it has some weird feeling of personal reward, probably going back to the time I wrote before I learned how to type. I also think writing by hand forces me into a certain economy of words, because I write slower than I type.

Thanks for all the well-wishes!

El Mocho - I'd recommend that you might want to start submitting to the many literary journals out there. That is what I h ave been doing for the past few years.

Welcome to FPN!

I'm a big fan of the Peli Juniors---I think I've got about five of them in different colors, to take different inks. tongue.gif
