Yes, all the Lamy Safaris and Al Stars I own are some shade of black, white or gray!

I have more, but they were not in my office at the time of the photo shoot.

The only BW Safari I do not own is the smooth black one. For some reason I dislike it;
the Charcoal is just so much nicer.

Hooray for gray!

There's an older Alpine model too: matte white with black clip.

Yes, I don't have this one either. It is a difficult pen to find NOS nowadays. It is textured, right?

I am not to happy with my smooth white one, to tell the truth. It is the worst quality of my Safaris and has the micro-cracks-in-the-section problem. Many people who own the new white one report similar experiences, but I suspect the older version was sturdier.

To be honest, I've never had a real Alpine (the closest was a beaten up frankenpen but that's another story) but from what others have posted here it is textured.

Hmm... this seems to be a problem with the pens with glossy finish. Don't really like those personally, 'cos I'll worry about scratches. Gimme more matte finishes smile.gif

I thought my Flame had the same problem, but what I thought were little cracks near the nib were probably flash lines left from the molding.

If you've changed the nibs, not pushing the nib down as far as it'll go can also allow ink to pool around the bottom of the nib. Maybe this applies to your pen?

Hm... I did change nibs, and because this thought occurred to me as well, I checked and double checked that the replacement nib was pushed in all the way. It certainly seemed to be. Now I've removed the nib and am super-cleaning the feed and the stained section, after which I will reassemble the whole thing again as tightly as possible, just to make triple-sure that nothing is loose...

All the other Safaris pictured work fine however, and I've replaced nibs on all of them (switched the original EFs to Italics). The textured Charcoal is by far my favourite; that pen is indestructible!

Thank you : )

I think gray is under-appreciated in pendom!

I like your gray-scale pictures too. I have seen many people mention that the gray textured Safari is their least favorite. I have all the colors and the gray and charcoal are tied for my favorite.

BTW, the older white pen exists in smooth and textured versions. Somebody mentioned in the Safari colors thread that they had a smooth charcoal but I have never heard of another.

Hurray for gray indeed!
