For sale are two vintage 1950's Montblanc 146 G fountain pens made from black celluloid with telescopic piston filler.

Those are wonderful writers with great nibs. The reason I'm selling those is that I have a nice 146G with an "EF" nib which is perfect for me. I just don't use the "OM" and "M" that much so I figuered that I don't need three of them...

Pen I:

Black Celluloid Montblanc 146 G fountain pen with the older, longer ink window. Pen is used but in nice condition without much surface wear. Only clip and cap band show some mild brassing but looks shiny again after a short polish. Pen is working and piston filler has ben professionally restored. Ink window shows some ambering and black stripes are a little bit faded.

Nib is a smooth semi-flex two tone 14K "OM" or "OF" nib but filling knob is marked 146 G "EF".

New Price is: 300 Euros (= 450 US $) or best offer.

Pen II:

Black Celluloid Montblanc 146 G fountain pen with the short ink window. Pen is used but in nice condition without much surface wear. The cap band show some wear on the plating but looks shiny again after a short polish. Pen is working and piston filler has ben professionally restored. Ink window only shows a little bit of ambering and nice black stripes. Gripping section shows some very mild shrinkage typically found on those old celluloid MBs.

Nib is a smooth flex two tone 14K "M" nib and filling knob is marked 146 G "M".

New Price is: 300 Euros (= 450 US $) or best offer.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

Many thanks for looking

Are the two tone nibs from the 50's as well or put in later to replace the original nibs?

The two tone nibs are original from the 1950's. Modern and vintage nibs are not interchangeable on the 146 pens as the modern ones are much thicker, while the vintage ones are thinner but more flexible (I tried to fit a flexible vintage nib into a modern 146 which did not work).

Michael,

What are the dimensions of the 1950s 146's (capped and posted)? Are they the same size as the modern 146's. From the photos uncapped they look a little shorter. Thanks.

Dear Mark,

Yes, the vintage 146 are slightly smaller in dimension (both shorter and slightly thinner; also the gripping section has a slight taper).

Dimensions are:

length capped is c. 13 cm, length posted is 15,7 cm, widest point at cap band is c. 1,6 cm, thinnest area of the gripping section is c. 1 cm.

Many thanks

Just for clarification (because I had some questions on this).

The pens for sale are the 1950's vintage Montblanc 146 G fountain pens made from celluloid.

Even they are visually similar to the modern "1980's - today" Montblanc 146 the vintage pens are totally different pens.

  • telescopic piston filler (resulting in large ink capacity)
  • made from celluloid
  • flex nibs which are ground much different from modern MB nibs
  • feed is made from celluloid

Thanks for looking
