I know that Baystate Blue has been pretty well done to death on the FPN, and as a result of that, and while planning take due care with this ink, I bought a bottle.

Initial impressions are that under fluorescent light, it has purple overtones, but under natural light it is an intense cobalt blue. More testing to come.

However, the one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the smell. The ink has a mild but definite smell that I would say is like formaldehyde but not nearly as searingly intense. (I hope I'm not giving away any trade secrets here, Nathan.)
My wife, OTOH, thinks it smells like a red wine, Shiraz to be specific.
The smell is more intense than, and quite different from, old Parker Quink with Solv-X.
I compared it to my only other Noodler's ink, Ottoman Azure, which has a very mild, almost fruity, smell.

Has anybody else noticed this smell? It was so patently obvious as soon as I took the lid off, that I'm surprised it wasn't noted in the reviews on this forum. This is a new bottle, from a new shipment to Australia. I am wondering if the formula has been tweaked to reduce clogging problems, in much the same way that the new Parker Penman Ebony has been tweaked.

Ya made me smell it! Interesting smell but I couldn't exactly place it, maybe a little like mercurochrome. I've used it in two pens, a Translucent Blue 200 Pel and a Parker 51 special edition. Had no clogging issues so far with either pen. It's a bit hard to get off the ole sink but I can't really tell if it is staining the Pelikan. My wife is using the 51 and let's it sit quite a while between uses and it has started right up each time. When I try to clean the 51 is when I'll really see if I will have problems with the ink. Man I love that color, but like others, how long I use it and in what pens will depend greatly on the problems that arise from using it.

Just before I hit Add Reply on this message I decided to smell another Noodlers ink on my desk and see how it smelled. My FPN Tulipe Noire pretty much smelled the same!

Hey folks! This could be yet another item to add to an ink review!

I look forward to the day where taste will be introduced as a category of ink reviews.

Yes, I do find that this ink has a rather pungent nose of crisp applewood-smoked bacon infused with saddle leather, the delicate effluvium of violets and sage, and finishes with a distinct undertone of Yankee impudence, wouldn't you agree? (raises pinky) wink.gif
