Yes, the NOS Legacy II that I just got has a small crack in its inner cap too. The crack is only about 5mm and doesn't look like it will affect the function, the cap clicks on firmly without any problem. However, I'm still kind of disappointed to find this.
I noticed that the O-ring is not as supple as a new one and the rubber looks kind of dull, that's why I ask about this in the first place. It probably will last quite a while before it fails, I just want to be prepared and have the parts replaced before anything bad happens.
I am sorry to share the disappointment; I didn't think about that until after I wrote the post. However, the consolation, I am beginning to think, is that the cracks may be universal and irrelevant. Both my pens have small cracks in the cap insert and neither leaks or dries out. If they ever do, I have a feeling Sheaffer will come through. Sorry if my curiousity did anything to dampen your enthusiasm for these wonderful pens, which I like better every time I pick one up. I sit in my eight by eight cubicle feeling like an executive with my beefy yet graceful pen and gold nib.
I have had some luck reviving old o-rings with silicone grease. I don't think that would hurt the pen, since it is recommended for the o-rings inside the old touchdowns. Anyone else see a problem?
