Full Version: Question about a P51 being auctioned
The Fountain Pen Network > Brand Focus > The Parker Forum

Hello all,

I'm curious what's driving the price of the 51 being auctioned here.

Is it the cap? According to Ernesto's site, this is considered a "common" cap. It's a double jeweled pen as well, so is it the combination that drives the price up? I'm not up on 51s and I'm just curious about this.

Thanks!

John

It is the fact that it is a double jewel pen which is driving the price. It is actually under what a DJ 51 has been getting of late on ebay, I would expect to see it go to about $200 before it is done. Other than the 14k hallmark on the clip there is not alot different about that cap as far as I can see.

Cheers,
Sean

For a clean black DJ with a nice, fully lined, undinged cap....I guess $150 isn't out of line. It's got a clip ring marked 14k. Is that solid gold?

Gold clip (and, one might expect, matching tassie) add significant cachet to an already desirable double jewel pen.

It should go for $250 or around there. The fact that the trim is 14k, AND the bottom jewel is black (little is known about black jewels - harder to find than honey jewels IMO) brings a nice 51 DJ. Other than that, nothing really special about it.

Thanks for all the info guys. The info on Ernesto's site, noting that the cap is common, also notes that it usually has a 14K clip. Sounds like the complete package is a little unusual though, which is driving the price.

Hi John,

Nothing terribly unusual need be invoked. $150 for a relatively clean DJ 51 (even sans alloy gold clip) is not a bad price. If truly excellent and retail, would run >$300-350 even without gold clip. Of course, how excellent it really is...

Did anybody see the DJ Nassau Green with 14K gold cap & clip go for $772 on the bay last week? I was expecting 500 maybe and nicely surprised. I think it good when our investments gain value. It's one of the things that makes treasure hunting more fun, no?

Hi
would this be similar to the pen the question refers to ??
usa parker ?
George
The link above is a first year 51 pen with a first year/ second year desk pen barrel (the blue diamond in the barrel tells that this is a desk pen).

Many thnx for the Quick response
What is meant by a desk pen
would this be considered collectable or is it just one of many
Am a novice ( although am selling a few i picked up the parker included )
But am interested to learn and possibly posses a few of what i am starting to regard as pieces of art
thnx LES

PS
George

WOULD YOU ALLOW ME TO INSERT THAT INFORMATION INTO MY AUCTION ?

Theres no need to yell...

I'd advise you to take more pictures of that pen, with the blindcap on and so forth, thats a nice pen, and you'll probably get a nice bit of change for it. The color is cordovan brown, and it is an unusual pen. I don't know how the fact that its a desk pen barrel will affect the price, but if I had to guess it wont hurt it. The pen look like its in really nice condition.

Hi Pete
Not Generally been a forum chat person in the past so have to learn the social grace of "chat"
Is the blindcap the small one that covers the plunger ( if so am learning the jargon already )
My sister gave me these to sell
In the past ive been to live auctions where pens like these have been in boxes of assorted house clearance and sold for peanuts and i thought they were just pens
If only Wisdom comes with age
Thnx Les

Yeah, its the small cap. Invest in an Ebay "picture pack" for that pen, it'll be worth it. Also take a picture of both jewels. It has the aluminum jewels that are desirable-the jewels are the things at the ends of the barrel and the cap.
