Full Version: Why did I not bid on it!

I don't know too much about Conway Stewart's, although I have been reading the Big Book of CS Numbers, but I thought http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=168396079 looked stunning.

I didn't place a bid because I am almost broke and shouldn't be buying any more pens. That been said I didn't expect it to go for $7.60!! I am not that broke that I wouldn't shell out that much for my first CS!

Does anyone else have similar tales of the CS that got away?

*Shaun* goes of to cry with his new Pelikan M400.

I wouldn't beat yourself up too much on that one Shaun.

I have had a couple of #106s and have sold them both. They were manufactured relatively late in the life of the "original" Conway Stewart company, had a semi hooded nib and , IMHO, a very cheap pressac filler.

My great preference is the earlier lever filler CS pens with the "open" nibs, like the 100,77,76,58,55 etc. They have lovely writing qualities and can have some of the best colours found in pens

Thanks Jim, I feel better for passing it up now. A few weeks back I passed up a restored 85L (ended up with a Pelikan 400NN insted).

P.S. I checked the letterbox this afternoon, no luck. Fingers crossed that my wait shall be over tomorrow!

Man, are the streets of NZ paved with underpriced vintage FPs or...?!? blink.gif

Sometimes Readymade. I think it is because we are such a small country and there are not many fountain pen collectors.

That been said, a lot of vintage pens aren't as easy to come buy in NZ. In the last 2-3 months I have only seen 4-5 Parker 51's for sale. And that is both on the internet and shops!

The late models with the "pressack" filling system are not worth much (from collector perspective, pretty much worthless in fact). So I really wouldn't be too upset about letting this one go.

I do see auctions where valuable CS pens go for way under their actual value. But you don't know that you would have actually gotten the pen for this price had you bid: Perhaps the other bidder was prepared to keep escalating.

Good luck in the future!

I am glad I didn't bid on it! I now have $7 more to try win http://www.trademe.co.nz/Antiques-collecta...n-169706058.htm which was listed not an hour ago.
