After writing with Black and Blue for some time, I would like to try out some red ink. I read here that Waterman red is quite good.
Which one would you buy? My pens have fine and XF nibs.
thanks

Hi,
Noodler's Antietam is a very versatile red; depending on the flow and the paper it renders from a dark orange to a deep dark red. Quite interesting.
I also like Noodler's Shah's Rose, that produces something like a reddish bright magenta. Very beautiful and bright. Not a red red, but a nice different color.

Hi Johan,
Waterman red is a bright, orangy red, and a reasonable agressive ink (low pH).
Personally I use Noodler's Ottoman Rose a lot, although I wouldn't call that a red ink, as IMO it has the colour of a young claret wine, and when it comes to red reds, Swisher Intense Red. I also use Swisher Maroon a lot. The latter is more a brown red, of course.
Another nice red red I use a lot is Omas Vespucci red. I have that in my Pilot Music

. Great effect

.

But Noodler's is not easily available at stores, isn't it
Montblanc ink seems to be rather good too?

OK, we're talking RED here? Not Burgundy, Rose, Purple, Brown, Cinnamon, Sienna etc. ?
Waterman Red is OK.
Omas, Mont Blanc, and Parker "Reds" were way too thin and weak.
I have not tried the Noodler Red, but the Red Rattler is a good medium dark red.
My perfered "red" is Sheaffers. Just red with no brown or pink or orange or yellow ...

Hi Johan,
Noodler's can always be ordered via the Internet. I have done so in the past, and will do so in the future, no problem

. It just requires a little longer wait

.
Regarding MB inks, I find the colours a little anemic in any but the wettest writers, with the exception of permanent blue black, which isn't a very safe option in pens, and which you are trying to escape from

. Montblanc burgundy is quite a nice ink, and it is relatively speaking less anemic than the other inks. It's a pleasant old fashioned burgundy, actually.
I haven't tried MB red yet, but I probably won't. I am not really a red ink person. I only have 4 "true" red inks, vs 8 burgundies, 8 greens, 8 blacks, 16 browns, 18 blues and 7 blue blacks. You get the picture...
Warm regards, Wim

I like waterman red for markup, but an entire page of waterman red might be too much. I like the way the ink goes on the paper watery but dries with a solid color.
Noodlers widow maker is a red that looks better on the page all by itself.

Wim: 18 blues?
You must be liking the film "Blue in the Face"
I think I will try Waterman red first, because it will not be long pages, but words.
I will buy Noodler's in a short while, because so many folks are laudatory about it!

Hi Johan,
It's even worse, because Blue Black is really blue too, and there there is turquoise, and teal...

Nobody has mentioned it yet, so I figure I'll speak up in favour of Diamine's Monaco Red. It's a nice, darker red, and I find it sits alone on a page just fine.
Looking at TWD's comparison page, it looks similar to (but more intense than) Noodler's Antietam.
cheers,

Same here. It is currently my favourite (not so) red.

Red ink??? Let me see, I think that Noodlers Widowmaker is a really killer looking color  I like the bloodlike ink and the way it looks on paper. Wawterman red is another great true red ink. I have issues with ink being called red when it is really orange!! Thats why I am pretty picky on the color red. Levenger Cardinal Red is a nice true red color too!!

I think Sheaffer Skrip Red ink (new stock from Slovenia in the cone-shaped bottle) is excellent. It's in the center of the red spectrum, and it's a great improvement over the old stock in the cylindrical bottle (better red hue/shade, no longer "washed out," and yet still easy-flowing and non-dry-smudging). It's also easy to find and cheap to buy, but I haven't bought any yet.
Diamine's new Passion Red ink looks right on, too. It's Diamine's first real red.
I agree that Waterman Red is a tiny bit toward orange, but not as far toward orange as the Pelikan or the Lamy. Waterman ink does behave well.
Noodler's Red (some retailers call it "Standard Red" to distinguish it from the brand's other reddish shades and hues), is also a real red, not orangish, not brownish, not pinkish, and not magenta-ish. It flows well and it doesn't dry-smudge. It's my red for now.

Hmm, so Sheaffer's red Skrip might be another good option. I also like the shape of the bottles
I hate Skrip blue-black btw
No one in favour of Quink red!

Speaking of Lamy Red, it looks almost flourescent

Personal favorite is Noodlers/Swisher Devil Red - bright red, even in f/ef nibs, and as a bonus it's permanent. IME, it dries quick, resists smudging (and I'm a leftie), lubricates well, and isn't bad to flush out either.

Waterman red was the first one I ever bought, and because it was so orangey, I threw it out. That bottle now holds Binder Blue.
After years of looking my fave reds are:
Omas Red which is identical to Amerigo Vespucci Red
Skrip Red which is a nice center of the spectrum red
Levenger's Cardinal Red - another strong, clear red
Diamine Monaco Red - leans toward blood red but is still quite nice.
If I were still looking, I would check out Noodler's Red and Noodler's Widowmaker.
Good luck,
Dorothy

Hi Johan,
To me, Waterman Red doesn't look orangy. I'd call it a bright red--and it's what I've been using the last couple of years.
Other, deeper/darker reds I like the looks of are Diamine Monaco Red and Sheaffer's Slovenian Red (the newest red of theirs.)
You now have so many opinions that you'll probably have to buy a bottle of each ink mentioned and check it out!
Best, Ann

Thanks!!! I think I will try Slovenian Skrip, because I can buy it in a shop, whereas I have to order Noodlers on the net.
