Full Version: Installing naked nibs?

Ahoy!

In looking around MartiniAuctions, I've seen many listings for vintage Pelikan nibs. Not the nib/feed unit you'd screw into the barrel, but just a naked nib. I imagine they'd especially be useful if you had a vintage Pelikan that needed a better nib installed.

How do you install one of these?

Here's an example (from http://www.martiniauctions.com/auction/item.php?id=7700 )

Hi,

On most nibs I have the collar comes off, you align the nib on the feed, put the collar back on and screw in (found this out by accident one day when I was playing ith a nib unit).

You need to be careful especially with the vintage nibs as the collar can break , if they are a bit hard to remove it may be dried ink, so an overnight soak should loosen them.

Anyway, thats my experience (not that I have actually changed just the nib), but maybe somebody a litle more expert can give some knowledgable advice.

That is pretty much what had happened to my vintage 140 nib. Came off by accident.
Only problem I have now is that the collar is not as tight as it was before. One has to be verry careful when unscrewing the nib or the whole thing is falling apart ......

I would not try to install it in a vintage nib unit. The collar of a vintage 400 nib broke when I unscrewed the unit. They are very brittle crybaby.gif

Hi,

You do need to exercise care especially with vintage pens, I tried to unscrew the nib on a 400NN and ended up with the collar staying well and truly stuck in the section and the nib/feed in my hand.

Eventually pushed the nib/feed back in, but the pen became a hard starter, as the nib/feed became misaligned as I tried to refit, after a while of living with it, I decided to pull out the nib again, aligned it properly and held it very tight as I pushed it back in to avoid twist/movement this time it worked and the pen now writes as it should, no hard starting or skipping (well it has had to refills so far with no problems at all, even when left for a couple of weeks).

If in doubt send it off, as I am told the sections and or feeds can also break which will make the pen unusable.

Best of luck.

Andy
