Peoples who have already done this- what should I be expecting?

A nice pen.

What specifically are you looking for in the way of direction? I have ordered from Nakaya directly, and John Mottishaw, and they were both great. I have a double Nakaya review here on FPN that goes into more detail on the issues associated with each process.

Nibs.com (Mottishaw) will do more hand holding, asking you what you want, whereas with the Nakaya site, you will need to fill out there very detailed from so you will need to have a pretty good idea of what you want. You can do this just by going through their site. It lists most of the options, and will give you an idea of how to build the pen.

Then you may have several emails going back and forth between the company and you, asking questions.

In either case, you need to be prepared for a wait of at least 3 or more months, depending on the amount of customization. The other option is to order an in stock pen from Nibs, or one of the Asian companies, in which case the wait would be much less.

I hope that gets you started.

Exactly. Just mail sales@nibs.com and talk to Jonella. She will guide you through the entire process. If you can afford, try to get the "elastic" nib too.

Love that Avatar, Stanley. I just got one myself a few months ago.

I first bought the Tortoiseshell model with a (semi)flex medium nib and liked it so much that purchased a Kuro-tamenuri (blackish red -tamenuri-) long/portable pen with an elastic music nib. I plan on keeping the latter forever!
