I've read many nice things about the Gentleman, and I've always liked the Waterman FP for the smooth line and the heft of the pen -- I know it's probably silly, but paying 200 bucks or more for a pen that is predominantly plastic, hollow, and oh so light doesn't seem right. I'm looking at an Expert II - would this be a good equivalent to the Gentleman (assuming, of course, one can't get their hands on the Gentleman itself)? Feel free to correct my misguided ways regarding plasticities!
Thanks

The E-2 is not equivalent to the G'man, as it is a totally different shape. E-2 does have nice heft, and is a great, dependable pen.

I agree with Satrap, the Expert II is a great mid-range pen - well balanced and comfortable to use.
If you wanted a gold nib, the Carene is an excellent pen to consider but is more expensive.

Thanks all,
I realize the shape of the E2 is different from the Gentleman, but in terms of heft, affordability, and the fact that it's a Waterman, it seemed that this is the way to go. My concern with the Carene, in addition to cost, is the attached nib, which makes repairs, if ever necessary, prohibitively expensive if not outright impossible to perform. It is a very attractive pen, however, and so I can see why many are drawn to it.
Thanks again

Hi there,
I have several Experts and they all write very well and are comfotable to use. I bought a Carene as a mad indulgence and wish I hadn't.

I would not recommend it in any way at all especially when looking at other pens in its price range.

I have three Expert IIs and can highly recommend them for their reliability, classic looks and solid heft. I also like the way the lid clicks in place when posted. I also have a Carene and can recommend this pen as a sensational writer also with nice solid heft and feel. However, the Carene is a more modern looking pen so if you prefer a classical looking pen, you can't go past the Expert II.

Hi Armchop
What exactly makes you regret having bought this Carene?
Actually it's on my shortlist, so I'm interested in your reasons
