We are missing an entire genre, so far. How about Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Harlen Ellison, etal. The pen possibilities in this area are boundless.
Krom 101
Deckard
I also vote for Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

As for the genre mentioned by Krom 101, my favorites would be Philipp K. Dick or Neal Stephenson.

To clarify my original post, I was thinking "current" as living/writing now (or deceased
in the last 5 - 10 years). I pondered the question from the standpoint of who might be
considered a "literary giant" of the level of a Hemingway, Vernes, Dickens, etc. There
are certainly quite a number of prolific writers (e.g., Grafton, Steele), famous writers
(e.g., Rowling, King), and writers of varying talents, but who would be "worthy"?

If you want a literary giant of modern times, one must consider Mario Puzo. His works were more popular in screen format, but the books were even more compelling. The character development was intimate. Their stories were more endearing. The structure of the writing was phenomenal. The prose was captivating. The were the only books of the crime syndicate genre to ever capture the imaginations of nearly everyone in our short attention spanned nation(USA), even if they did have to be made into movies to accomplish this end.

As for the design, I would have to say black with a white stripe(tuxedo-ish), with the star in orange, with a rose engraved onto a clip reminiscent of a bullet. The author's signature in gold or red.
Bokkie
Roelf Meyer and Cyril Ramaphosa. They were on opposite sides of political spectrum back home in South Africa. Between them, they were the architects and authors of South Africa's constitution in the 90's after our historic elections in 1994. If not them, Nelson Mandela. His books have humbled all of us in South Africa.

Who should be honoured by MB?

Uh...you'd have to hide all the MB bashing posts for them to buy into this.

Kurt Vonnegut? Now that would look a bit crazy. Truman Capote's would look a bit flamboyant. Stephen King would be the top of my list.
RMN
I vote Iris Murdoch,
for a male writer: HE Bates

The Rowling choice does have nice options for design, but somehow I can't visualise this for MontBlanc. Visconti, yes

Dick
troglokev
Don DeLillo, for mine.

"They are here to decipher the natural language of their culture, to make a formal method of the shiny pleasures they'd known in their Europe-shadowed childhoods --- an Aritostelianism of bubblegum wrappers and detergent jingles" White Noise
heineda
Kurt Vonnegut
Ken Kesey

Modern - Cormac McCarthy, Seamus Heaney.
