Full Version: vintage pen eyecandy. A holy grail for Duofold collectors?
The Fountain Pen Network > Brand Focus > The Parker Forum

One of the charms of vintage pen photography (probably shared in common with vintage pen restoration) is the opportunity to handle pens one probably never would procure for his own collection. Each pen shot leaves a piece of itself behind with the shooter.
Having shot some 6000 vintage pen by now, I have had the pleasure to "own" a piece of a bunch of grand pens.

This one I shot today. It has great significance in the Duofold universe. It is the first of its ilk i've seen "live".

Well, if you think about it, we dunno with certainty that this actual pen has a bandless cap, though that would be expected.

This, at the very least, is a lipless cap wink.gif

I am not a Duofold kind of guy..
But other than the engraving on the cap, nothing else hits me in the eye...
George
No way... This is not yours? please no...

Jack Knife cap imprint, #6 nib, First run of production duofold! I would trade anything away for this pen. Who cares about the crack.

Way cool David.

Way cool David. If this is yours, bring to DC so I can have a look.

"Crack"...

Such an... understatement wink.gif

More in this case of an...amputation.

Still, i hear you. Sad for poor Davey, i only own (metaphysical sense) a piece of it, having photographed it. I do not own the actual item.

Was fun to shoot.

Of course, the 123 Parker 51's i picked up today are fun too. But, that's a story for another thread. Gotta get some sleep.

Any odd 51's in the bunch? Sleeping comes secondary to pens.

Neat!

I just started reading the Duofold book this morning so I recognized it instantly.

Bonus question: What is the orgin of "Jack Knife Safety"? No fair digging it up in the Duofold bible!

IIRC - Jack Knife Safety was for Parkers version of the Boston Safety inner cap - safe enough to carry in a pocket like a Jack Knife.

Absolutely correct. That certainly didn't take very long.

Well, we just had a thread on inner caps a bit ago and it came up then.

"odd" is bit subjective, i guess wink.gif

I don't object to the nice DJ Nassau and the crisp handful of DJ Cordovans (such nice caps). Most are nice regular pens, Aeros, Vacs, couple, "Jeweler's" Caps, lots of parts-pens Ron Zorn and I are sharing.

Saving some nice 51's for a focused update down the pike. Wrestling with whether to put one or two scarce non-Black (most by far are black) red-band pens up.

So it does exist in the flesh ;-)
It also would put the Pompeian (spelling?) story pretty much down as its a very bright red. can't pick up black flecks in the RHR from the pic.
Was the actual production run JKS? Or was it just the prototypes? (My book is at home and I'm in the office rying to finance my habit.......)

Hi Max,

I'm pretty sure these predate the Pompeian. IIRC, the RHR pens marked JKS and Duofold were the original Tebbel first run for market trials. I believe the Pompeian was the new color trying to get away from the fragile RHR that the JKS used.

All the best,
John

I handled one of these, once. I did not realiz that it was so exceedingly rare. I guess I should have enjoyed it a bit more...

Cool pics!

Thanks John,
With a bit of extrapolating this does make sense, a lot must go down with the black that they mixed into the RHR to try and make it stronger I think.................

Not really. I'm jealous as heck (that I didn't find it and that I couldn't afford it even if I did), but I'm also glad to see something like this fall into a collection that gets shown off now and then. Shows are still best to see stuff in the flesh, but thank goodness for the internet expanding the collecting experience.

Spinning even further off topic........ Seems like sometime in the not so distant future, pens in the wild will have all been found. Then our only sources will be recycling collections. But collections typically are locked up for years and years. Imagine what it could do to prices....and show attendence...

Ahh, bring to DC. Me want see.
