Introduced in 1950, the 400 ushered in an era of change for Pelikan. It was a well-made pen that proved extremely popular, and would eventually provide a foundation for the brand. Indeed, the M400 (and it’s sibling, the M200) make up the backbone of Pelikan’s pen division.
This particular example is a 400 from the early fifties (not the later 400N or 400NN). It is in superb cosmetic and functional condition. It writes like a dream, putting down a wet line as good or better than my Binder M600. It is choosy about angle, though: gripping the pen at or above the cap threads provides the best writing experience.
Regarding condition, the barrel and associated hardware are literally flawless. I cannot find a single scratch, ding, or dent. The cap shows evidence of use: the gloss finish is worn to matte in some areas, and there is a small scratch approximately 1 cm in length (which is hard to notice unless you’re looking for it).
I should emphasize that this pen is in fantastic condition for it’s age, 100% functional with no hiccups. If you track down a really nice cap, you’ll have yourself an as-new 400 (any 200 or 400 class cap will fit this pen, either vintage or modern). Note that the original cap is completely functional, and is just fine cosmetically (only close scrutiny will reveal signs of wear).
Includes a leather carrying case.
Price: $95 shipped via USPS first class mail with delivery confirmation. Insurance and other services are optional, and quoted upon request. International shipping should fall somewhere between $5 and $8, depending upon location.
Ordering Process
Money orders are fine, but no checks please.
My preferred payment method is via PayPal. If you'd like this pen, please send an "I want it" private message, with your PayPal email address mentioned in the body. For a number of reasons, it’s easier for me to send a PayPal invoice as opposed to receiving payment direct.
Once the invoice is sent, the pen is effectively held for 24 hours. If, in 24 hours, the invoice hasn't been paid, it will be canceled and I will send an invoice to the next buyer in line.
Should you have any questions, drop me a line.
