Full Version: Is the Pilot Décimo (Decimo) the ultimate Capless pen?

MYU
There are a number of Décimo reviews floating around, with a range of opinions. It seems to me that overall, most people who have gotten a Décimo like it. A few have gotten one and reported that they were a little disappointed. Anyway, aside from posting in the poll, please share your experiences both positive and otherwise! smile.gif

I tried it out but didn't like it. I like the heft of the brass bodied VP and the aluminum Decimo just seemed too light. I went the other way and got the even heavier Fermo. So I have two regular VPs and a Fermo.

I have VPs, Decimos and Fermos and love them all. The size and weight doesn't bother me on any of them as I only use them to take short notes or to mark up documents. Gotta love the design, flexibility and practicality of these pens. Nothing else comes close to ease of use and the interchangeable nibs makes them very versatile.

Sorry, can't vote yet. I just ordered a Blue Decimo from the Ujuku store this morning and am waiting somewhat patiently for delivery. I love the nibs and the convenience of the one handed operation of my two VP's, but find them to be a little too heavy in the hand and in the shirt pocket. I am hoping the Decimo is a little more comfortable. I'll come back with a vote in the next few weeks.

The Decimo looks like a nice variation, but I find it too similar to the VP to attract me into buying one. Also, I love the Raden finish for the VP--I use mine a lot, and unfortunately there isn't a Decimo Raden. It would be interesting to have the two of them as a set. If anything, I'll probably end up with a Fermo like HDoug down the line. smile.gif

Although i voted for the last option, i might buy a Decimo at some stage. At this point i consider it to be a nice VP variation like Gary pointed out. I have a few VPs that i really love and use daily and i just bought the Mandarin Yellow over the weekend which is on the way to me happyberet.gif
It will look great alongside my orange LE and brigthen up my collection. No plans for a Decimo yet, but who knows ?

I had a white one and liked it. But it was a little bit too lightweight and the white colour just a little too 'feminine' for my liking. I'm a lefty and had no problems with the clip. I would have kept it but I was made an offer for it I that I couldn;t refuse (i.e. twice as much as I'd paid for it....... wink.gif)

I love my blue Decimo. I've been thinking about getting a regular VP or a Fermo as well, but haven't done it yet.

Why are my only poll choices pens offered by Pilot?

I'd say No, it's not the ultimate, but then I own a DaVinci. wink.gif

Of course, how could I sidestep the Stipula Cheerleader and not mention that Stipula also makes a capless pen? Sorry, Deirdre. wink.gif Indeed there are other capless fountain pens, but they are much more obscure--Pilot/Namiki really dominates the scene. I do like the twist style Stipula design, though.

There's no poll option for me, but I've just tried both in a store recently, and I prefer the full-sized VP. My budget doesn't allow me to get either at the moment, but the Decimo wouldn't be on my short list.

I do too. That said, I do own a VP (somewhere!) and have plans to buy two more. If they weren't so rare, I'd go for the red and green carbonesque; I kind of like having a set of red, green, blue pens (too much editing, I guess). That said, I want pens to carry with me, so rare ones aren't my preference for editing pens. I guess I'll have to suffer with Aurora Optimas or somesuch.

Count me as one who got a Decimo, unloaded the VPs, and has never looked back!

From reading the reviews I'm one of the last choise on the poll set. I like my VP and the thought of a lighter one doesn't thrill me at all. I just like it's feel, but I may be temped by the heavier one tongue.gif

Yeah, I thought I might put in an option for "Got a VP, don't care for the Decimo, gonna get a Fermo!", but the options were getting a bit long. wink.gif
Deirdre
I haven't tried the other options yet, but I'd love to test drive a Decimo. I have a thing for white pens, so I may be adding a white Decimo to my hoarde eventually.
Jersey Diabolo
I've tried, and wanted to like, the Decimo several times. It simply did not feel right in my hand. The width of the barrel was too small for me and it was too light; the weight of the VP seemed to make it better balanced. If possible, try both before you buy. My 5' 3" better-half prefers her chrome VP too. Three VPs at the Diabolo's.

Two VPs and 3 Decimos - love my Decimos. They fit my hand perfectly (and I'm a 5' 4"). It's one of those situations that you really should try both pens if at all possible before you buy. I don't keep my VPs in rotation anymore. I should probably sell them.
Pengrump
I have several VPs. I used them regularly for short notes and to do crossword puzzles. Then I got a Sesenta, which is the Decimo sized pen with the marbled finish. Now the VPs sit in my pen chest and the Decimo is my traveling companion. I don't usually like smaller pens, but the weight and shape of the regular VP don't seem as comfortable in my hand as the Sesenta.
succubus
I voted for the last one, but I would buy a decimo for the color options. I think a pink one is a perfect coordinate for my light blue VP.
rollerboy
Much as I want to unequivocally like my VPs and Decimo I don't. I find them on the dry side and neither the CON-20 or the CON-50 impresses me. So no, the Decimo isn't the ultimate. I do prefer the decrease in size and weight over the VP though.
Penache
There is an elegance to the proportion and size of the Decimo and it fits perfectly in my hands. I have the Slate and the Blue and I wouldn't think twice before buying another. I have tried a VP before and it felt bulky and a tad heavy. For me, the Decimo is the epitome of form and function combined.

Sounds like you need a Binderized VP nib there, Rollerboy. biggrin.gif I've got a 0.9mm stub VP nib that writes beautifully. Not wet, not dry--just perfect.

So far I have (take deep breath ....)

3 decimos - blue, grey & white

6 VPs - older octagonal black and the current model in black with gold trim, red with rhodium trim, blue carbonesque with a cursive italic Binder Nib, black carbonsque & blue with rhodium trim

As far as Binderizing a Decimo ... yeah, but Richard doesn't have access to the rhodium plated nibs, just the gold. As well, I've actually got a Binderized 0.6 mm stub for my VP. It seems to be a bit baby-bottomed though, skipping a stroke every few words. It's best with the Pilot cartridges, but really didn't seem to like my PR ink. I'll give it a few more flushes and fills and try Diamine but ... hey ... finicky loses points with me. When it's on a roll though and not skipping, wow, I like it.

With my Decimo I don't have any skipping issue but there's a warm up ritual to start writing with it for the day. Take it out of the pen mug (where it's been sitting nib up), orient nib down, extend, retract, put it back in the pen mug nib down for a minute. Only then take it out and use. Otherwise there's no ink flow. (It's not "skipping" if it hasn't written anything yet!).

Clearly I must like the VP and Decimo or I wouldn't put up with this stuff ... but it would be nice to not have to. Hence my unwillingness to bestow the title of "ultimate" on the Decimo.

Rollerboy,

It's a tad off topic, but it's not normal for a VP nib to behave that way. You don't have to continue with the frustrating ritual you described.

I had a Binder VP ItaliFine nib unit that did not perform well. I emailed Richard. Barbara responded to my email – and quickly, I might add.

I was nice about it, they were very nice about it, and they said they would make it right. I sent the nib unit back, Richard made some adjustments, and it writes beautifully now. Other than shipping it there - which was minimal for such a tiny piece - it didn’t cost me anything. These things happen. Richard stands behind his work.
