Hi All:
I have just joined. Seems like I used fountain pens for most of my mis-spent youth and am now returning to wanting to write only with fp's !
Problem is that I am shocked at how expensive and complex the business of FP's has become...or maybe it always has been and I just was not aware !
I am considering buying the new Retro 51 Scriptmaster 2 - but can;t seem to fins any reviews. I am also finding that what is medium in one nob is broad in another - and a Japanese fine point seems like an ultra fine to me. I am looking forward to learning a lot and finding the "perfect pen" for me ---- great group here it seems

Welcome to FPN!

As you begin researching which pen(s) to buy (first)
I would suggest this as an overview of what is out there in price spectrum.

(I know this was posted here recently, but didn't find it today).

Or possibly a $50 and 1 or 2 less expensive pens.

Enjoy the hunt,

David

Hi and welcome. Look at some of the other new introductions and you can see what we all recommend for starters!

Welcome to the board,

You have come to the right place to learn all you want to know about fountain pens, inks and fine stationary

There is a Pen club in Bellingham, and Seattle, the meetings are great places to learn about and try many different pens.

Good luck.

Welcome.

If you are in the Seattle area, you may just want to drop by World Lux or the University Bookstore. Both have plenty of pens that they'll be happy to dip test for you, and Todd at World Lux is very knowledgeable and helpful.

You are very correct in your observations about Japanese nibs. Most Japanese nibs tend to run a full size smaller than their "Western" counterparts. A Pilot "F", for example, would typically be more comparable to a Pelikan XF.

If you have questions about a particular pen, check out the reviews section here, or ask in the appropriate forum. This board is full of knowledgeable people who love nothing more than talking about their pens!

Thanks for posting, and good luck finding your "perfect pen", though, if you are like many of us here, your "perfect pen" may well end up being a collection of twenty or thirty!

Welcome to FPN from another PNW'er.

Are you a wetlander or a drysider? (Both are good.) cool.gif

Welcome from down the road south in Vancouver!!

Welcome to FPN. There are FPs available which are highly reliable, a pleasure to use, and yet inexpensive. For example, Waterman Kultur and Lamy Safari/Vista. Many members of this forum also like the Pelikano or Pelikano, Jr.

I did just get a Pilot Cavalier with a fine point - that is actually very nice for $45. and a Levenger true Writer Golden Tortoise. The True Writer is really lovely - very smooth writing. It has a medium nob though and I think I would have preferred a fine in this pen. The Cavalier has a fine and it is , in my hand, really an ultra fine.
I also unearthed an old Pelikan 120 italic that still writes well - cracked with age though it is !
I have my eye on the Rtro 51 Scriptmaster 2!

Thanks so much!
I hardly ever get to the mainland anymore - too busy for me..... though the pen clubs sound interesting!! I am on San Juan Island.

Thanks so much!

I am probably longing to replace my long lost 'perfect' Mont Blanc whose nib miraculously confirmed to my hand. Now I could not possibly afford any MB's !
I have my eye on a Retro 51 Scriptmaster 2 in Citron.
I just received a Levenger Golden Tortoise today that I love - it is so smooth writing - but it is a medium nib - and I think I would have preferred a fine point on this one.
Are the German points as variable as well?

I had no idea that there was such a wealth of pen places in Seattle ! I don't get to the mainland much from San Juan Island - but I do have to go to the Convention Center mnext month - hummmmmm - maybe so ! I doubt my friend would be terribly understandable about my pen fascination!

Well, Thanks ! I am happy to have found some folks who don't think that a compulsion about pens is odd!

I hear you. Did you see this topic on impressions of similar pen?
Hope this is what you are looking for, as when I look for reviews/mentions of a pen
I may come across and want to buy.

Hello from a neighbor across the sound in Seattle! It's always impressed me how many FPN people come from the Seattle area and the Pacific NW in general. There's always room for more, and it's good to have you here.
zquilts
And see - living in relative isolation os San Juan Island I am just beginning to find out about the plethora of fine pen-abulists in Washington !
