I'm sure I was one of the first respondents for this pen; I have been looking for a Pelikan San Francisco for a very long time. But I am not going to get sucked into a bidding war. That's what eBay is for, and frankly I think auctions are inappropriate for FPN. Good luck to whomever is bidding.

I agree! If he wants to sell he should price it. This is not an auction.

I second Saverez's statement. Leave the bidding wars to EBay. I like the fact that FPN classified's are either "fixed Price" or "Best offer up to". I have much happier buying from the FPN versus the EBay with all its foibles.

Please try to understand the atmosphere and the general feeling of a forum and its members before you try to tell them to relax when you are the one stepping in and disrupting things.

As I understand it, when selling here, either price it publicly, or take it to eBay. Auction type sales are not appropriate here.

The admins should step in here, and address what is appropriate.

There are other sites besides ebay, that will satisfy this sellers needs.
I can think of penbid most specifically.

Mistakes do happen once, and when its conveyed, lets let it off with the assumption that a lessons been learnt.Luckylindsy kindly go through the guidelines so that you are aware, this is a great site and all pen lovers are welcome.

Can somebody who is so certain that this sale shouldn't have been conducted this way because it is against a rule kindly point us all to that rule? I can't seem to find it.
HyperCamper
Caveat emptor. That's all.

If you don't like the way someone is selling, don't buy.
sojy
Jimmy here the options are not given like Ebay so buyers are used to a price being quoted and many users feel comfortable with this site because of the same, thats why such a response, but request others to take notice that the guidelines do caution against make personal attacks, lets put this to rest
chumpowie
Gonna chime in here.

Without a clear 'end date', pre-qualified bidders, and the other controls found in Ebay, such auctions have an air of sleeze, like some yabbo getting you to bid against yourself. That is not the feeling we need to foster.

I've aways found this forum to be civil and, clearly, an impromtu 'auction' rubs the culture the wrong way. Admittedly, unless one knows the current street value of what one is selling, the risk of getting less for your item. There's the rub of selling on the FPN; most of us are in pens for the love of them, and some want to make $$ to upgrade the habit, not to buy a second home.

I think we've spanked the issue enough.

Well, I do appreciate the support and help I have gotten but LUCKILY, the one pen I had for sale is sold and going to a good home. To you that felt the need to be rude, I understand that you take your pens seriously but hopefully next time you won't be so uptight and mean to the new folks. If I ever do come across a pen I want to sell again, I wont be selling it on this site because of you, its a shame that a few sour pickles can spoil the whole batch.
Deirdre
I agree -- the rudeness was uncalled for. Luckylindsy, welcome to FPN.

(I don't know that the rules definitively prevent auction-style things here, but it's definitely not the norm.)

There's no need to be defensive. Unless there were posts that were hidden by moderators, I don't see anyone being rude to you. The harshest language I see in the thread is the word "inappropriate." If you are new to something and make a mistake, you can expect to have that mistake pointed out. Nobody even said that you were doing something wrong, just in the wrong place. So chill out and welcome to FPN.
Nolan613
First off, welcome luckylindsy to FPN and sorry you got of to a rough start. As chumpowie notes this forum is not really setup to handle auctions. If you want to sell and possibly haggle a little well, that works for most of us. thumbup.gif

I'm with Jimmy on this. If the forum rules or guidelines don't specifically state that auction type sales are prohibited then the original poster has done nothing wrong.
