Full Version: Custom Nib Grind on a Modern CS

Has anyone had a nib reground on a modern CS by any of the nibmeisters? I've got a modern CS with a medium nib which isn't quite as smooth as it should be. Rather than just sending it back to CS, in which case I'd probably opt for a nib swap to an extra fine, I was considering getting the nib reground. Tempted with a stub to be honest. I did have a 0.9mm straight italic in a VP from Richard Binder and found that a bit too wide for my liking. My preference is for fine and extra fine nibs and I see Richard lists 0.4 or 0.5mm stubs. Would I notice much difference between the two in terms of making the choice.
The other point is am I brave enough to trust international postage with my pen lticaptd.gif

My husband and I have had 2 CS pens reground by Richard Binder: my Centenary Overlay was ground to a .4mm cursive italic, and his Icon 100 was ground to an XXF round. I have not tried mine yet, as I am abroad, but my husband uses his regularly and says it is a super-smooth writer.

I have other (non-CS) italics reground by Richard: a .35mm cursive italic, a .4mm cursive italic, and a .5-.6mm stub. All were very well done and are great writers. There is a considerable difference between the .4 cursive italic and the .5-.6mm stub.

Hope this helps,

I had my Wellington from Richard, with a 0.7 CI...I have probably snailed you with it smile.gif

I think his CIs are a bit 'crisper' than some others.

As you didn't buy your CS from him((I think), you'd have to go into the very long queue.

Let me do a little research on your behalf...I'll PM you...and I have those 3 snails to answer, too biggrin.gif

I tend to recommend the following:

Richard Binder http://www.richardspens.com/?page=nibneeds.htm

Michael Masayama http://mikeitwork.com

John Mottishaw http://www.nibs.com

Nagahara (senior and junior from Sailor) are also very talented.

If you have the opportunity to go to the DC pen show, you will be able to talk to all of these nib masters in person.

With kind regards,

My only CS is a Dandy which I had Richard Binder grind from a factory F to an XXF. Great nib, a true XXF. The only bad thing was being without it for the weeks and weeks that is his backlog. His backlog estimates have been very accurate, though.

I find it doesn't take that long for a nib to smooth out in use. I have had a couple of pens which have worn from fine to medium and a couple in current use which have smoothed with use.

If there's a little edginess on a nib I intend to use I don't worry as this is lost over a few busy months. The smoothness is than bespoke to me. In fact I quite like the idea!
