I have a copy of Guiness Book of World Records* here.

Under "Manufactured Articles" - Pens section, it says;

QUOTE
a Japanese collector paid $2.34 mio in Feb.1988 for the "Anèmone" fountain pen made by Rèden, France. It was encrusted with 600 precious stones, including emeralds, amethysts, rubies, sapphires and onyx, and took skilled craftsmen over a year to complete.

I ran a quick Google search without success.

A search here on the forums led me to a single thread , where the name of the manufacturer was mentioned, but nothing more.

Has anyone ever heard of this pen or seen a picture of it?

it would be more interesting to know what the most expensive non-jewel-encrusted pen of all time is. because that way, you'll know the value was decided by performance, rarity and historical significance.... y'know, real-world factors.

with jewels, all you have to do in theory is attach more bling (skillfully, of course) than the last pen, and voila, instant world record.

There's a "World's 10 most expensive pens" list floating on the net. According to that list, the most expensive non-jeweled pen is Grayson Tighe Limited Edition and sold around $22-24.000.

It's 4th on the list, btw.

Do maki-e pens qualify as jewelry? I am sure there are many maki-e pens on offer that are much more expensive than this. Ruud
