Full Version: Shining/Rust Removal Help?
The Fountain Pen Network > General Pen Topics > Repair Q&A

I received two pens from someone who didn't like fountain pens, and they haven't been used in about ten years or so, and so they're now rusting. It's mostly the clips that are rusting. The caps also need a good shine. Any suggestions of what to use?
Also, please give me GENERIC names instead of proper names. Like if you were gonna say McDonald's, say fastfood instead. This is because I'm from Manila, and so I probably won't relate to American products.
Thanks for the help. smile.gif

I'd suggest something like GLO metal polish (basta yung ginagamit sa mga military pins...)
However, I'd think it can only go so far on your pens.

Ahh... That's what my dad suggested too. Haha. Thanks!

not sure on nibs, but this gets rust off chrome so worth a try:

get a piece of aluminium foil, wet it with water and gently rub.

I know, but try it anyway and let me know how you go.

Which side of the foil? Shiny or matte?

For shining and rust removal I start with a mild metal polish (Simichrome for example) and a Q-Tip or paper towel. This combines a mild abrasive with a soft buffing action. The other possibility is regular toothpaste- an old timer's favorite. Regular tooth paste is mildly abrasive (more so than metal polish). Here you could use a toothbrush, Q-Tip, or paper towel. The toothpaste being milder- you may want to try that first.

Aluminum foil is also a possibility, but can leave metal bits and in the pits if the rust has reached that point. On the mildest rust, it works though.

Remember too that even after you treat the rust, it will eventually return.

Same here. As for the nib, try a jewelers cloth (Sunshine Cloth) first. No water or polish needed just the cloth.

Doesn't seem to matter - experiment.
