Sorry, I'm sure this is elsewhere, but did MB put the wrong signature by mistake?

Yes. MB originally released the WE Dumas with the son's signature. MB recalled unsold incorrect signature pens, and reissued the Dumas with the correct father's signature. You'd think the incorrect signature WE Dumas would draw a premium, but both pens seem to sell for about the same prices these days. I have both in my WE collection and very much like this model.

That recall has to be made into a runing gag. In my experience the "son's" are easier to find than the "father's" and overall this is the most readily available writer's LE. Or am I wrong?

I don't know that's it's a gag per se, but like I mentioned earlier, both "son's" and "father's" seem to be equally available, and cost out at about the same market prices.

The son's pens were only pulled from the MB boutiques. Authorized dealer kept their stocks which they continued to sell. Now this "mistake" was not known to the general public at the time. So, when you went in to buy the 1996 Writers Edition from an authorized dealer, you may have gotten either father or son. Now the pens that were pulled from boutiques, were thought to be destroyed. However, some believe that they were re-intoduced into the market later through authorized dealers, or grey market. Judging by the availablity of the pens, I think the latter action is better supported.
