Full Version: The Pel m1000 is finally in my hands ...

Hi Everyone,

I finally got the Pel m1000 and she is one BIG BIRD !

Well off to a topic where I very much need your suggestions :

The pen came with a Medium Nib - and the nib writes pretty good

But I really would like to go in for a BB or BBB nib

I have read quite a few threads on this forum where some people have said the Pelikan nibs they have received with their pens were scratchy

So I have been pondering...should I send this medium nib in and take the risk of doing a nib exchange for a BB or BBB that might

wind up coming back to me scratchy from the factory ?
(I was also thinking whether I should buy an extra BB or BBB nib - but that would be a

last option as I really don't want to spend so much dough after having already spent quite a bit for this pen)

Can you guys please let me know your experiences regarding Pelikan nib exchanges and your opinions as to my current dilemma ?

Thank you all so much in advance for all the wonderful suggestions

Well, you didn't say where you bought the bird but Pelikan is like this (no, I don't work for them)....

Pelikan has a truly exceptional service so that you can always exchange that which you bought -- and/or don't like -- for something else. Especially nibs. Phone or mail the company where you bought same and tell them what you want. They'll do it.

You probably don't want to hear this but when I buy a Pelikan FP from "my store " (where I don't work) they will always exchange this that or the other immediately without any questions asked.

(One reason why I like that brand... )

Hi Mike ... Thanks a lot for the reply ...

Actually I did call Pelikan and they have told me that they will readily exchange the nib for me - so there is no problem with that

Its just I had heard from a few people here on FPN that some of the replacement nibs they got back from the Pelikan factory were a little scratchy, or tines

misaligned, etc... so I just wanted to make sure I don't send in a good working medium nib and get back a faulty BB nib

But for now - I have decided to send it in ...

If by any chance there are people who have had experience with the BB or BBB nib on the m1000 model, it would be great to hear about it

Thank you again
Mr.Rene
Jellybelly,
3B(BBB) is a really paint brush... and I love broad nibs so mine was changed for a Broad one,
Good luck,
Rene.

I have one with BB that came straight from Pam Braun, and wrote wonderfully out of the box. It writes wet but not a gusher. It's especially delightful if you like to watch your ink color flows and shades.

I find the BB lays down a wider line than a B, but not by much. I don't know the usual size of your handwriting, but with the BB I have to write slightly larger when writing Western script; with Eastern script I have to write even larger else they become illegible. But I have fine nibs for that so it's not a problem for me. I haven't got a 3B, but soon. I should use it as a brush that ought to be fun.

With BB I think you probably don't have to worry about scratchiness, but since its tip is quite wide it'll sometimes skip if you don't pay attention to its angle.

As mentioned already, Pelikan probably has the best after-sale service. Chartpak is exemplary.

So there I was .... unscrewing the medium nib on my new m1000 for the first time.....

I cleaned the barrel of the pen by flushing it with water and next cleaned the nib, getting it ready to ship in the mail the next morning to Chartpak for a nib

replacement ....

But then something unexpected happened ... a bottle of Parker Quink (a closed bottle thank god !) was sitting on my desk which I accidentally knocked over

headsmack.gif while I was trying to put the now cleaned nib into a small container to send out to Chartpak ...

I had to do it .... having used Pelikan Black Ink with this m1000 in testing out the nib, I figured why not ... I may as well try the Parker Quink Black Ink

that just got knocked over ... I mean it was worth a try I thought ....

Lo and behold .... the m1000 medium nib now with a barrel full of Parker Quink Black Ink is writing like a Broad and writing as smooth as a baby's behind....

I kid you not .... the nib is writing like a Broad

This is really in stark contrast to when I had filled the Barrel with Pelikan Black Ink - with which the nib not only gave me a "dry" feeling, but also felt a little

scratchy ...

To be very honest ... with the Parker ink, the nib is performing very well .... and for now, I would have to say I am a satisfied customer

Was it fate that the Parker ink got knocked over ... was it an accident .... or was it just pure luck ... I have no idea folks unsure.gif

I had to relate my experience here - I know different inks had different flow rates ... but I have to be very honest that I did not realize it could have made

such a difference - in my own case, it has ! lticaptd.gif

I want to thank everyone here who gave me such great replies and advice - and I want to thank the Pelikan Gods for having shown me the right way .... cloud9.gif

Seriously though, it has made quite a difference for me - and I think I now realize what people here meant when they said the medium nib was quite wet

in its flow ....

Thank you guys again ... FPN rules ! thumbup.gif

that last bit makes sense. I didn't snap to the fact that you were using Pelikan ink which though good in its own right, is a stingy ink.

You'll find some other inks like Quink (Diamine, PR) which flow much better than Pelikan inks. Enjoy your pen!

The cleaning might have helped, too, but certainly trying a different ink is always a good idea.

My nib exchange with the Pelikan factory was a joy biggrin.gif

I got a Majesty and felt the nibe with was not for me but could not decide wheteher to go for a F or OM.

I wrote directly to the factory and, without me even sending my nib off, they sent me both a F & OM to try with a letter asking me to return the one I did not want and my M nib when I was ready.

Thats service for you.

Shirley McClain would be able to explain it best.

Congrats on the Pel! If you do decide to change the nib don't worry because they will do it over and over till you are happy. But I wouldn't worry about a b bb or bbb nib, it's the fine and extra fines that people are talking about being scratchy. The broads and higher are big round floating nibs that are rarely scratchy!

Thanks everyone for the replies ...

I have been continuing to use the pen all day today, and the flow has been great

Now I will have to give the other inks a try

Actually I might go for a BB nib as well just for curiosity purposes ...

But I think I am going to keep the M nib (which is writing quite smooth now) and a little later buy a BB nib as a spare

The cleaning on the pen might have helped, but the pen was practically brand new - so I am guessing it could not have helped that much

Now I want to try out different inks just to see what the results on the nib turns out to be (I am guessing Waterman Black might increase the flow too much

on the nib ...so maybe I need to stick with something like Parker Quink from now on)

Will be sure to let you guys know ....

But thank you all so much ....

Glad it all worked out for you. My advice is that if you have a nice nib that you really enjoy using, KEEP IT. I have several Pelikans, more than I should admit in public, and while I like them all they all write differently except the ones that Richard Binder tuned. So if you have an out of the box nib that you really enjoy, hang on to it. If you get another one and decide it is too broad, you can easily sell it. Pelikan pens and nibs usually move really fast on the sale board. j

I have a Black/gold M1000 enroute. I am very excited. With the Pelikan ink I tested with, I found the standard broad nib to write very smoothly. I have read here that that people feel the M1000 is a wet nib, maybe so with a high lubricating ink however with the somewhat drier Pelikan ink I thought it wrote very well on H.P 32Lb premium Laser paper. I have an M1000 stub being ground up also.....I love Stub nibs cloud9.gif
