I'm a repair neophyte, sorry if this question is too elememtary. I have a Waterman Skywriter, which has been restored, but the section is a tiny bit loose. When I write, I hear it creaking and moving very slightly, and while it doesn't move enough to affect writing, it is a bit annoying. Is there any good way to secure it?
Thanks.

Hello BobR, I guess if it's loose the section comes out easily (press fit) to reveal a sac attached to the back of it.
I'm assuming you have the open nibbed varient, boxed lever filler etc...
I would use shellac but be carefull only to get it where you want it. Shellac creates a seal and can always be broken again if you need to remove the section. I believe tryphon even sells a synthetic shellac.

Hi,
Just use some of Tryphon's section sealant rosin compound.

Second this recommendation - I have some and it's great stuff! (usual disclaimer)

Thanks for the replies. I've discovered Tryphon's supply page and I'm floored by all the goodies on it! Will have a try with their sealant.

The sealant is for "threaded pen part[s]", but what about my friction fit sections which don't have so much friction? In some I've used slips of paper to hold the section in tightly, but for some this lets them wiggle when I write. For others, I have to fold the paper a couple times to get it to fit. Is there a better solution to tighten up my loose sections?

Use a coat or two of orange shellac to increase the diameter of the section. Just apply and let it dry thoroughly before assembling the parts. If you get it too big, remove it with denatured alcohol and start again.

Funny, I was just going to post this exact question!
I have a stiped Wearever with a nice nearly clear visulated section I'm going to re-sac soon, but the section flops around and creaks. Rather too loose for a slip of paper to fix, cardboard might be a better idea...
I'll try the shellac. I don't have a sac yet (18 or 20, I think, big pen!) so I have time to get the shellac nicely dry before I put it together to write with.

One caution about coating the section with shellac and letting it dry: Be sure to heat the barrel before slipping it over the coated section. Shellac softens at ~ 140 degrees, so a temperature near there will do. You risk cracking the barrel if you've built up the section too much, especially on pens with brittle plastic barrels, such as Skylines. I speak from sad experience on this.
