Full Version: Advice Needed on Chopin Nib

I've decided on a Chopin as my first MB and need some advice on nib selection.

I went into the shop yesterday set on getting an F or XF nib, but after trying the demonstrator pens am having second thoughts and might go with a medium nib. The F & XF nibs seemed to have more tooth than I expected, whereas the medium nib was smooth as silk. Is this normal for the Chopin? I'd really like to know what other Chopin owners think about the F & XF nibs.

Mine has a Medium nib but even with it I had to do a little tweeking and smoothing.

Chopin with a F nib here. Slight tooth, but I'll survive. I must say I quite like it.

Did you do the smoothing yourself? I'm new to fountain pens and hesitant to work on pens myself.

Yes, I used a loupe to look a the tines and found them to be slightly miss aligned. I gently aligned them and then used a smoothing stick and figure 8's to get the nib really smooth. The stick looks like a big nail polisher with 3 grades of abrasives.

Thanks. I'm going to try the fine nib and see how it goes. As I understand, you can change out the nib within the first six weeks, so if the fine doesn't work I'll switch to a medium.

Yup! Or try both in the boutique while you're at it.

My Chopin ended up becoming a Le Grand with a fine nib. Since I want this pen to be my main writing pen, I decided the Chopin might be too small for comfortable, extended writing sessions, plus I really like the piston filling system better than a cartridge/ converter.

I've had the pen a couple of days now and am incredibly happy with the Le Grand and the fine nib. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Le Grand is real nice too and it has more heft than a Chopin. Good choice either way. I have a Chopin that I fill with MB green ink.
