Hello, I've been reading posts on the network for a short time (found it thru a google search for FP info). I've used FP's on and off for 35 years or more but never had a proper pen... used good ones, a couple of Parkers, but they never started when I did. Operator error, I'm sure.
I went to Staples to buy some ink for my pens and lo and behold, I saw a Phileas for $38.00. That pen seems to have a positive following here, so I bought it... and I really like it.
I'm retired, work a few hours a week at Publix (a southeastern super market) enjoy surf fishing and woodworking... building chessboards in particular. (I play chess but not very well)

Hi there Barry and welcome to the crew!!
Nice to meet another oldie here like me (I retired a half a year ago and am now working harder than ever).
Good that you got a Phileas. Honestly, that is a good start. Yes there are other good starters and/or those which will next pop up on your list, but it is nice to know that you already found/chose a starter yourself.

See you soon!!

Cheeseburger in Paradise, if they don't serve those, I'm not going!

I'm not so much of a Buffett fan but I know of his stuff. Brian Wilson's melodic strains, choc full o' hooks, bridges and counterpoint have always held me in rapture: - )

Your header is bound to attract the more mature among us. As I find myself with more time on my hands, I've also turned to fountain pens which used to be a passion. I've recently treated myself to a Pelikan M600, and I'm a very happy camper I can tell you.

Welcome...

Welcome to FPN,Barry!
You've come to a place that will provide much enjoyment thru fountain pens. I know about Publix since I live down in
Tampa. They're the only supermarket down here whose fresh-made sandwiches(like philly chese steak--yum!)and
macaroni salad are the best! But I digress..... puddle.gif

Anyway, there are many folks here who enjoy helping you with any f/p questions you might have.

Howdy Barry!!! Welcome to FPN. There is a lot of good info contained in the various sub-forums, so please make yourself a t home.
BTW, I am a serious chess player, and am still playing on a roll-up vinyl board. Maybe one of these days, I will have to get one of your custom-made chessboards. smile.gifsmile.gif

Not sure if I have this forum thing down yet, this post could go anywhere... but I want to thank everyone for the great welcome.
I've already gleaned more information than I ever hoped to know about fountain pens.
I'm sending two Parker 51's to Ron Zorn to be introduced into the 21st century. These are pens that I've had for years and years and my father had for years and years.
I'm fascinated with some of the pen storage ideas and am in the process of converting an old cigar box.
But I ramble... Thanks again

Welcome aboard, Barry. smile.gif Building chessboards sounds really cool and fun.

I'm rather new here myself, but have found that if you tread respectfully, and make sure to say please and thank you, that you'll make fast friends and have a great time. I feel disconnected now, if I don't visit numerous times per day! roflmho.gif

Welcome Barry! I grew up in Ft Myers/Cape Coral area and moved out west last year. I've been missing Publix ever since!

John, you're absolutely right! I've been jonesing hard for "real" store-bought macaroni and potato salad... Nothing beats a Publix sub for my money. By the way, do you know of any good pen shops in the bay area? I'll be visiting the in-laws at Christmastime. They're in pasco county. I might need a good diversion for a few hours... Or in Orlando, for that matter, since we'll be hitting up the parks and visiting friends and family there, too...

Hi brandon!

Wish I could give you a good answer on the pen shops--the only one that comes to mind is Crane & Co.,an upscale stationery store in the International Mall(upper floor). They're basically a stationery store, with inks, leather journals,
some F/Ps(Cross,MB,Visconti,Waterman,ACME(only RBs that I've seen),Lamy. Used to have Pelikan, but haven't seen any
in a while.). Shockingly(since I'm not necessarily an MB fan)bought two weekends ago some MB ink--Bordeaux. I like
it;highly impressed with the color. Good price($11.00 + tax)and interesting shoe-like bottle;must do a review on it.
Just remembered--if you're interested--that on the upper level there is also an MB store......... biggrin.gif
As to Orlando, haven't been there in a while so I don't know of any B & M stores up there........ embarrassed_smile.gif

You're right--nothing beats a Publix sub. I especially like their roast beast subs! roflmho.gif
