I was in Ephesus too, but it was raining and I didn't want to get too close (the route was pretty trecherous when wet).

To be honest it looks like a stork to me...i'm not an expert but afaik pelicans make their nests near the water and they live in large groups.

Yup, exactly. Real pelicans nest in or at the water. Storks usually nest on top of old chimneys. At least here up north! Whatever that thing is, it might be sitting up there for the last 2000 years.

I guess I assumed it was a Pelican, but I'm not an expert in birds. Here is a picture of another one a top a byzantine pillar a few blocks away. Its a better picture of the bird.
