Well I've been playing around with fountain pens for about a year now. They're sort of a hit around my school so I jumped right in. I've been using a Lamy Safari and just yesterday I received my new Waterford Lismore. I decide the get the Waterford pen instead of getting a graduation/senior ring. The pen was actually cheaper than most of the rings so I think my parents are satisfied. The only ink I have is Noodlers Blue-black, but I'm really interested in getting some new inks. Mainly blues and greens, but I'm open to suggestion for inks to try. Well, that's about it.

Welcome!
Wow, you're lucky that fountain pens are making a comeback at your school! Is it a high school? I am pretty sure that I'm the only quirky person at my school who uses a fountain pen.

Welcome!

I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions, and the forums here are great for seeing various inks in contrast with others. I'm not so much into green-green inks, at least not yet, but I love some of the blue and blue-green ones. I've been having fun recently putting Waterman Florida Blue and South Seas Blue together at about 2:1. It's blue, but it's not, yet it's turquoise-ish. Fun! Predictably I'm getting very different shading using medium and fine nibs (both Kaigelu pens, as it happens). I'm trying putting some Waterman or other well-behaving inks through new pens as a few new ones have been a bit balky starting with more saturated inks like Noodler's. Love the colors, though, and bullet proof is something I appreciate.

Philip1209 - Yes, I go to high school in louisiana. Actually, we're the number one high school in the state academically. There are very few sports, no basketball, baseball or football, only lacrosse, fencing and soccer. So there are a lot of people with sort of refined tastes, which include fountain pens.

SpinDance - Mixing inks sounds very interesting. I can't wait until I get to try some different colors and brands.

Thanks guys...

Welcome Thanatos (cheery name, no?)

Very few people wear their high school class ring beyond the first week of freshman orientation at college.

But a good fountain pen can get you through your Masters Thesis and beyond - without writers' cramp and without dumping a truck-full of half-empty BIC sticks into landfills.

Look into a Vanishing Point for note taking in college - solves the annoying problem of the nib drying out between brief notes during lectures. Medium for liberal arts curricula - Fine or XFine for math and science (all those formulas and exponents).

Have fun.

Hi there Thanatos,

Welcome to the FPN. Aaah for the days of school...when I went to school...which wasn't that long ago...I was the only person who used fountain pens. And the school I went to was pretty refined too. They say those who use fountain pens are deemed to be of higher intelligence. I forget where I read that, but I'd like to think it's true.

You'll get lots of suggestions here for inks and pens. If you like blues, I might suggest Waterman and Parker Quink blue-black, but also Noodler's Ottoman Azure. I'm using those inks now and they're pretty good, I reckon.

Welcome to FPN Thanatos.

Love the name. One of my favorite terms for death.

Which reminds me: So Eros and Thanatos were walking into a bar . . . roflmho.gif

Great choice on the Waterman. As for inks, you can't go wrong with Waterman's Florida Blue. Also, you might want to try the Private Reserve brand. I'm currently using Ebony Purple and LOVING it.

You know, I've been using this username for a couple years now on multiple different accounts across the web and this is the first time that I've had anyone make a comment about it, much less two comments. I guess if there was a forum where people would know what thanatos is it would have to be a writers forum. Have you ever read Thanatopsis by William cullen Bryant? I like that poem... Anyways, any more ink suggestions? I'm writing these down in hopes of finding someone who might trade with me. Not many people are interested in the only ink I have which is Noodlers Blue-Black, though. I probably should just go buy another bottle of something I might like and others might like to attract more traders. I dont know though... What do yall think?

Life is too short to only have one ink in your arsenal!

I have six on my current rotation cycle: Waterman's Florida Blue, Waterman's Blue-Black, Noodler's Polar Blue (bulletproof), Noodler's Hunter Green (bulletproof), Private Reserve Ebony Purple, and Private Reserve Purple Mojo. The Ebony Purple is my current favorite, although I'm interested in mixing up what Richard calls "Blurple."

Don't even go into the Inky Thoughts or Ink Reviews Forums. You'll be lost in a sea of recommendations about what inks to buy. Now that I look at my current list, I seem to be missing a good brown ink in this rotation. Besides, I should really have seven inks for seven days, eh? Ink store - here I come.

I totally agree with Todd about having more inks. biggrin.gif I know there has to be a good balance between 'enough to keep things interesting' and 'too many I don't have room to keep them', just not sure where that line is. (Yet?) I'm sure it has to be more than 7, though. Let's see, 3 or 4 pens inked, different colors or shades, 7 days a week....

"Blurple" has been word used fairly frequently in our home forever. Two members see blue and purple as the same thing, so just just say it's 'blurple'. Lovely color! After trying the Blurple mix per Richard I've also been playing around with various shadings of the colors which is also very fun. The variations I'm getting with just 3 colors of Waterman can keep me amused for quite some time: South Seas Blue, Florida Blue and Purple. I've got a bottle of the PR Purple Mojo, too. What a wonderful color! It's a bit in-your-face for the office, but that Ebony Purple looks right up my alley. I may have to order in some more ink, too.

I just want to add my personal welcome, too. Noodler's Aircorps Blue is Green/Blue or perhaps a Blue/Green.
