Full Version: Why should I buy...

I’m a Dutchman, so I’m always on the hunt for a bargain. We can agree on that, can we? tongue.gif

Good old Jim (PENHERO…..) has a beautiful (a really beautiful…) site. We can agree on that, can we? tongue.gif

Jim does offer quite some new Sheaffer’s for sale. Also some really nice looking Sheaffer’s Legacy Heritage for less than $160. We can agree on that, can we? tongue.gif

But why should a buy a Sheaffer, while I can buy a Pelikan M600 for about the same price? unsure.gif

What is so great about the Legacy? Is it a quality pen? Is it a hefty pen (I find the Waterman Carene WAY TO HEAVY). Btw, I have read the FPN reviews… :bunny1:

What would you folks choose; a Pelikan or a flagship Sheaffer?

What would Jim choose (that’s a VERY naughty question, eh, Jim) blush.gif

Btw, If I would buy a Sheaffer, I would buy it from Jim…. wink.gif

You should buy a Sheaffer instead of a Pelikan if you like the looks of the Sheaffer better. smile.gif But if you don't want a heavy pen, find a PFM instead. Jim is a really reliable and very service-oriented dealer, but the Legacy, while an excellent pen, is heavier than a Carène.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply; well, if the Legacy is even heavier than the Carene, it is not for me.... sad.gif

Is a Pelikan M600 or M800 much lighter than a Carene?

Thanks!
Velma
I love my Legacy, but it is, as has been remarked, a hefty pen. Not quite heavy enough to do reps with, but definitely not a lightweight pen. (I go back and forth between the lightweight ones like my Craftsman pens and the Legacy.)

Johan,

It is a good pen although weighty. It is well balanced, and I don't find it tiring. The 800 is close to the weight of a carene because it has brass internals. the 600 on the other hand is quite light. It is probably the one you'd like best.

Between the three pens you noted (legacy, 800, 600), Johan, sounds like the 600 is the one for you, given that it's the lightest of the three.

I love the Legacy. The shape fits my hand very well, the pen is hefty, but well balanced. The nibs, when good, are excellent, but I have had some lemons. Sheaffer is very good at replacing the bad ones, no questions asked.
A Legacy is always in my rotation.
DRP
Agree that Legacy is heavy but well balanced. Also, the two Legacy pens I have offer superb nibs (one stub and one medium). This is a solid, well made pen.

If the weight is a problem, you may want to look for something other than a Legacy. However, Legacy's other fine qualities make it among my favorites. I have Private Reserve Copper Burst in one now.

Johan, I don’t own a Legacy, but I do have several Pelikans, and several Sheaffers. I won’t part with the Sheaffers. One thing to be considered is that you can now still get Sheaffers from American production; you may wait with buying Pelikans until some major multinational chooses to take that company over and outsource production...
PS: The Sheaffer Balance is light-weight and of excellent quality.

Are the weights of the different Legacy finsihes all the same?
npt3
Probably, but it's hard to tell without a scale. ;-) The Legacy II I have (my favorite) with the polished Pd cap and the lined black matte barrel does feel a bit lighter - the body may not be all brass underneath like the Kings' Gold...

I haven't weighed all the Legacy pens, but a Legacy Heritage is just over 1.5 oz. By comparison, a Cross Apogee is about 2 oz and a PFM I is about 1 oz.

As an interesting point of reference, a Pelikan 800 is just a smidge under 1.5 oz.

So much for the idea that the Legacy is a "heavy" pen and the Pelikan 800 is a "light" pen.

I just picked up a used Legacy. It is a fantastic pen. I`m so pleased that I found one for a good price.
It`s a nicely balanced substantial pen that writes like a dream biggrin.gif
