Full Version: My First Legacy!

Friends,

My first Sheaffer Legacy arrived in the mail. It's the Legacy I, black laque with brushed gold cap.

What can I say? It's an unbelievably fantastic pen (and my most expensive yet, too). The quality and workmanship is art. I have a couple of Targas, and they're my best writers....were, in fact, until I got my legacy. A fine-medium with the perfect amount of flow. I hoped to keep it a stay-home pen, but the allure is too great to not use it everywhere.

I'm sure you've heard more than enough compliments for this pen. I've heard that laque pens, especially those that get even minimal use, end up with a gazillion microscratches pretty soon. My first pen, a Sheaffer Prelude black laque, had the same problem. Way to prone to scratching. I would consider myself a user, not a collector, but I really do like to keep my pens looking as best as possible. Is there any wax/polish/cloth I can use to bufff out microscratches? I live in South Korea, so it's rather a treasure hunt to find Simichrome. 3M is more easier to find, but I have absolutely no idea which ones are safe for pens.

Ordering online isn't out of the question, but of all the things I'd like not to dish out on shipping right after what I spent on the legacy tongue.gif

Any help?

Thanks a lot!
Kuno

edit:
Curses! My first, major scratch, right on opening the cap.
Big white UGLY scar right besides the holy facade of my inlaid nib. Drat!

How do I get this one out? blush.gif

Congrats indeed!!! I have a Legacy Victorian and LOVE it!! Great pens.

You will love the pen. Even if you pay a lot more money on a pen, you'll probably not enjoy it any more than your Legacy or Targas. Those inlaid nibs are impossible to beat.

I don't want to be discouraging, but I just tolerate the scratches on my pens. They get daily wear and still look great to me.

Hearty Congrats on your new Legacy. They're a real bargain, in my view. I'd second comments about tolerating scratches--they add to the character of a user pen. Tryphon sells pen polishes, though, if you want to keep things spic and span. A search on the name should return contact details.

Congratulations!!!

Nice pen.

Eric mentioned that Legacy pens are a real bargain. I agree with that. The inventory of Legacy pens is still large enough to keep the price down. In a few years, your Legacy will cost far more than it does today. So, not only are you getting a great bargain but you are getting one of the best pens ever made to enjoy using!

Tryphon participates in the Fountain Pen Network so you can probably look here for more information. There are other good vendors, as well which use the Fountain Pen Network and may have polishing materials available for a reasonable price.

Yes, Legacies are some of the best pens around. I have a few - a new one of future rotation, hopefully soon (gotta use up the ink in my Pilot 823 and Lamy 2000 first - a lengthy job).

On the scratches, do get the Tryphon wax. It will help.

Congratulations again!

Kuno,

Congrats on your first Legacy. There will many more Legacies to come.

I would leave the scratch if it is nothing too bad. The scratches will come in from daily use, anyways. I have used the scratch remover from Tryphon. The scratch was removed, but so was the black gloss. If you really want to try to remove the scratch, try the Tryphon wax as suggested by Erik (I have never tried it myself though).

Hi,

Congratulations these are nice pens, I think I have 5 FPs but it might be 6, with some matching BPs. I have 2 of the colour you have, one has had no more than a couple of fills, the other is well used and looking a bit tatty but writes very well so gets used often.

I think a bit of wear adds to the character so don't be afrid to use it.

I drool at you. I will have one soon enough.

I don't understand all the talk about scratches on lacque pens. If you keep them in your shirt pocket when not in use, they don't scratch. I have several, and they are pretty much scratch-free.

I am so glad you wrote this and so many people replied. I just paid probably way too much for my first Legacy 1, a NOS china red pen with a gold filled top. I knew I was paying more than I might on FPN, but I just fell in love. Plus I got it from the Fountain Pen Shop in Monrovia, CA, and I was glad to buy something pricey after all the time--and really reasonably priced repairs--that Fred has given me over the last couple of years.

I bought it because it was beautiful, but I was worried about the fine nib. It is the wettest fine I have every owned and writes every bit as nicely as my Pelikan 400. Oh, and I needed all that conversation on scratches, because the gold fill had tiny scraches out of the box. So congrats and thanks, Kuno.

PS, Purpledog, if you are reading this it is all your fault. All of this is because of your kind email telling me I needed to buy a PFM, which to be serious, I really appreciated. I went to the Fountain Pen Shop to buy one, but I commented to Fred that it was lighter than I had expected. So he led me over to the Legacies. It was just so beautiful, plus it had that sexy Touchdown converter. Of course, what sucks is that I STILL need to buy a PFM. smile.gif I keep telling my wife that I have tapped out on this hobby, but it is not true, I guess.
