I have generally bought notebooks with spiral binding on the long edge. What do you prefer?

I think I am used to turning pages to the side. However I assume there are some advantages to having the binding on the short edge.

Advantages I see to having the binding on the short edge include:
1. It's easier to make full use of the page width.
2. Some papers come in that format that are not available in the other format
3. They may be easier to use in some space restrictive situations.

Am I missing any advantages?

Which format do you use? To find either acceptable?

Thanks

To add a disadvantage to your list...top-bound notebooks seem to be slower to turn. I found that with my clairefontaine notebook at least. It could be my muscle memory just makes it seem slower but sitting in an auditorium psych class I found the notebook to be inconvenient. What worked for me was a homemade rolla notebook with two pieces of punched cardboard glued together for support.

I use circa right now...might just go back to composistion notebooks or use both together. I definitely prefer side binding. I'm crazy enough to make my own notebooks but I'm not sure the cos/benefit ratio is there in terms of time. I'm beginning to think composition notebooks are perfect for "archive" type notetaking. I'm actually working on a template now for to make notebooks from letter size sheets folded over. It's not ideal because of the paper grain(unless you cut letter sheets from larger stock) but I can have my copitc binding....

p.s. if I wasn't helpful than just chock it up to me thinking out-loud

Another disadvantage of top-bound pads is that it is much harder to write on the backs of sheets, especially in an organized fashion.
Recently, I've found myself gravitating towards top-bound Rhodia pads. I like them because the pads always are the same thickness as you write, and it creates a cleaner, more organized look on a workspace.

since i am left-handed, using a notepad would be easier for me. but like what Philip1209 said, it's hard to write on the back pages in an organized fashion so i still use notebooks. it's also easier to find the things i wrote in notebooks.
