Full Version: Lamy Joy as a desk pen?

Hello everyone,

The thought struck me today that the Lamy Joy, with its nice long tapered barrel, is not far removed stylistically from the desk pens of the '50s and earlier. I think the Joy would make for a nice modern desk pen, if there's a holder out there that the Joy fits into.

What do you guys think? More to the point, perhaps, has this been done before?

I'm not sure if it's been done before, but the thought has crossed my mind. I love the appearance of the pen. personally, and though the first thing it says to me is "calligraphy", "desk pen" is a close second! If you find an ideal holder, let us know!

By the pictures, it seems like longer than the safari. Just for that reason, it must be a desk pen because it does not fit in my pen case...

But at the same time, desk pen are supposed to have somewhat of a prestigious look... not sure it fits that part...

If it is the same section as a Safari you could probably cast a Safari cap in a block of acrylic and there you would have something. Just an idea off the top of the noggin.....

Though that would work, RLTodd, it wouldn't really be becoming of a desk pen, I don't think. I'm thinking of something along the lines of the classic desk sets of the past, with the metal pen trumpets that can swivel around.

My idea was to get an inner cap (if possible) and somehow affix the swivel part to its base. At the very least one could remove the clip from the existing cap and then attach the swivel base. Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to try it, but I would if I could.

Have you looked at the classic "8 Ball" Esterbrook desksets? Pendemonium has them sometimes as well as other sources. No swivel.

Back to what I now understand as your preference.............

If one obtained a swivel base, the turn up here and there, and then removed the clip from the Safari cap and made an adapter for the cap to the base, one might be able to arrive at something that was attractive and functional.

Hi,

I think you will find this review I just did relevant:

Nearly any pen can be a desk pen if you want to use it as such. The "Joy" does resemble vintage desk pens, and it is an excellent candidate for use as a desk pen. It is all up to your personal iterpretation of "desk pen," and your creativity in making it your own. Finding a suitable holder is all you need. Have fun with the project.

I think this is a great idea. Especially if you can find (or make) a contemporary looking base. Even an Esterbrook eight ball might would work. They are very sleek in design.
