One of the things that I found to be of special interest when I was in the Sheaffer repair center back in February were the large jars of thread sealant stored in the shop. Used for the same purposes as the normal section sealant, it was light amber in color, and had very little odor. I have the formula, and have duplicated what they used in the shop, and am pleased to offer it first to folks here on FPN.

What I was interested to see that they used the thread sealant on Touchdown and Snorkel section threads to provide a better air tight seal in the barrel, which of course leads to a more complete ink fill. (Next time you take one apart, check the threads, you'll find traces of rosin on it)

As I said, it's light amber rosin based, low odor, and quite tacky. It softens and releases quite nicely with gentle heat. I now use it for all thread seals, including Parker Vacumatics, Sheaffer Vacuum fillers, PFM, Snorkel and TD pens. It's also used to hold the nut in place on the piston rods on Sheaffer vacuum fillers.

I'm going to crawl out of the woodwork here and say that I was also really interested in the thread sealant that we saw in Fort Madison.

Consequently, I was the first paying customer for the product of Ron "Frankenstein" Zorn's cauldron. The price is more than fair -- and oh, by the way, the stuff works better than any other thread sealant I've ever used for pens. I've already changed my shop processes to use Sheaffer-formula thread sealant exclusively -- except on the shells of "51"s and their ilk, for which Ron will agree that shellac still reigns supreme.

If you use a thread sealant, I encourage you to switch yesterday.

I saw this stuff at the Raleigh Show and watched Ron use it.... He even let me touch the jar and look at it

I was angling to the be first to buy it from Ron, but apparently Richard beat me to it. I discussed this with Ron a month ago, but he did not bring any to the Syracuse pen meeting, otherwise I would have been using since then.

I cannot wait to get this stuff home and start using it.

How would you compare this with Giovanni's section sealant?

Different. Giovanni's section sealant is dark rosin based, and usually stiffer. It's a good product, and I've used it for quite some time. The rosin that I use is a higher grade (lighter rosin VS darker rosin) and has different properties. This makes for a thicker, but stickier sealant. I like mine better, but then again I'm biased.

The advantage that I have is that I was able to see what they were using, along with the label that had the formula on it, whereas I suspect that Giovanni had to come up with it from scratch.
