Hello everyone,

Over the past couple of days while channel surfing I ran across two old black and white movies, I'm not sure of their title, but I saw them using some type of hand "roller" they would roll over the document after they had writen with their fountain pen.

I know I'm not giving a lot of details but may be someone out there can read my mind and tell me what this device is called. I'm really interested in it.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Sounds like a blotter. Used to blot up extra ink so it doesn't smear.

Hi Mike,

The items you describe were called rocker blotters. In the days of dip-pens and fountain pens, these were extremely common (moreso with dip-pens, though) desk-accessories. Their purpose was (in conjunction with blotting-paper) to soak up excess ink on a written page, to prevent bleeding, feathering and smearing of ink.

I believe there are still some companies which still make rocker-blotters. Of course, you can always buy an antique one, they don't cost very much. They're usually made up of two parts, the curved base, and the removable handle. The handle is unscrewed and a strip of blotting-paper (say, about two inches wide, about nine inches long) is put in place around the base. The handle is screwed back onto the base and the ends of the paper are held in-place between handle and base.

Mike:

Even I knew what that thing is. I love black and white movies too, like The Marx Brothers etc.
I have often wanted to buy a blotter like that but always spent more time and money on new pens and new inks instead.

NOTE: If you do find something like this could you please inform us what company ec. I haven't found any real source yet.

I've seen lots of reproduction, modern (I think) rocker-blotters being sold on eBay. And plenty of older ones, too. They can't be too hard to find online. Of course, if that fails, you can always go to an antiques shop.

I think J Herbin makes one.

There are both rolling blotters and rocking blotters. Both are on eBay today, one rocker starting at $0.99. They come in a wide range of prices. There is a seller on eBay, Naragansett, who has 11 rockers up for sale.

Spike, now that's a real clue. Will do.

Best,
