Full Version: Cheap pen storage

I just got this from home depot:

It's supposed to be a tool chest but with some pen trays in the 3 drawers and my ink in the top, it works really well as pen storage. There is a locking mechanism which prevents you from opening the drawers with the lid it shut but simply removing the pin from the lock disables this. Of course, this no longer makes it portable but I'm using this for permanent storage on a shelf and have no intention of carrying it around.

Only $30 from Home Depot!!!

Nice! What a great re-purposing idea.

Wow!! Awesome idea!!

Nice idea. Although more expensive I use a wood machinists tool chest like this one. http://www.duluthtrading.com/search/search...ature=Product_1

you can get them a little cheaper than listed here. They're primarily red oak. The authentic ones are solid but some are veneer. And they do come in cherry if you want to pay. I use the thinner trays for pens and refills of all kinds, cartridges, roller balls, and converters. Keeping them nice and sorted. The top is deep enough for bottled ink. They do lock. They're lined with green felt.

Not since the Art Student discovered that a TACKLE BOX would hold his art media at least as well as a box ten times as expensive, have I seen such a brilliant co-opting of intended vs. practical purposes!

GOOD ON YOU, SIV!

I like the idea of the toolbox!

So ...... let's say your house was burglarized. Thieves with a sharp eye would notice the nice new toolbox -- locked -- and presume it to be full of ... well, new tools. Hmmmm ... look's like a father's day gift. They take it and run ... only to discover later that it's full of so many useless pens, most of which appear to be old junk (!). Into the trash they go! yikes.gif But hey, at least they got a new toolbox!

Question: If you were to have a toolbox stolen, would you lose more monetary value if it were filled with actual hand tools or with the hand tools we know as our beloved pens?

That is a great idea to keep things stored. Expecially the wooden tool box. I've got one that is probably 70 years old that my father had in his shop for 30 years until he moved to a smaller house. I've had it for 20 years and not used it but it was to nice to get rid of. smile.gif

obviously it depends on the pens. And the hand tools:

Wow. I can now foresee myself buying a fireproof safes made for guns and fitting it with shelves for pens . . .

These, even nice ones, are a lot cheaper than many of the fountain pens people talk about here.

Right, so I bought some necklace trays and put them into my toolbox!

The necklace trays don't quite fit so they sit at an angle in the tray. They actually tilt the pens up at an angle which looks cool.

The bottom drawer is full of my cufflinks BUT I'm running out of space for pens so maybe it's time for a bigger toolbox!!

I have cheaper pen storage, which I'll post a picture of as soon as I finish fussing with it. smile.gif

Great idea!!! If you fill the whole top layer with more Noodler's Ink, it will definitely not be portable. clap1.gif

PS. It reminds me of the crash carts in the hospital.
Imagine the volumes of ink bottles, hundreds of pens, reams of paper and nailed to the floor.

This pic got me all flustered:

What a setup. Very nice.

Nice - did you line the "pen" drawers with pen-trays? How many does it hold?
