What, don't you see the humor in separating the newly rich from their money? There is much more to these schemes than just the pen. You have to appreciate the whole scenario. It is really delightful.

What a waste of a pen. How many styluses could I make for my phonograph out of those diamonds?

At least MB took their time to create something that is unique. They arranged the gems in a somewhat attractive manner, and went to Van Cleef and Arpels for their Mystery setting. You must admit that they did a better job than Montegrappa, who just slapped in bunch of big stones uniformly on a big pen (ie. Peace Pen). Wouldn't say I would buy it, but there's been an effort to create something unique.

Its a promotional stunt / joint venture between Montblanc and Van Cleef et Arpels

The idea is to tag the Montblanc writing instruments name with an haute jewelier to produce the most expensive pen in the world..
The next time someone asks what is Montblanc? Do they make good pens? The reply would be yes, they made the most expensive pen in the world in liaison with VC&A
Then the 146 or the 149 would be purchased in rationale..
But then again, didn't Nokia do that with their subsidiary Vertu?

Or Hublot making the $ 1.0 Mio watch in baguette diamonds? They are only a contender in watchmaking and took this feat to produce the most expensive watch ever in order to get in the league with bigger names and to earn the Geneva Seal..

I do not agree that this pen is only for marketing reasons. This pen was created because VCA and Montblanc celebrated in 2006 the 100th anniversary about her companies. The pen was launched in 2006 ( in Europe ) maybe that is the reason why we have here more information about this pen ( press and else ).

Great shots there Maxpens! I don't think I've ever seen those shots before. I do believe that their 100th Anniversary was just a convenient excuse to make a pen together. I do quite like the Mystery setting.

The majority opinion here seems to think the pen is ugly, but some how I find the pen very beautiful, nice piece of jewellery, of course you can't write with it, just look at it and admire.

Dragon, you have a
lot of taste. Even the fact that you say "hideous" reflects this. I'd continue on to say: disgusting, grotesque. reptilian, wierd.
That's what MB -- as re marketing -- is all about !If you want a really expensive pen, but something with taste and good looks, then buy something else -- e.g. for only 8888.00 Euros (no joke here):

Ave ze nice dayo

Hello Sammy,
if you ever become the chance to have this pen in your hands, I am sure you change hideous in grandiose.
The pen is in fully working conditions and of course you can write with this pen. Weeks ago I saw the pen with blue stones ( sapphire) looks for me better then with rubies.

i'd gladly accept this pen--then sell it the first chance i get for a fistful of M1000s, agatha christies, vac maximas, mandarin duofolds, etc. etc., and then buy a range rover or something with the loose change.

I find it repulsive, too, but I think my Lamy 2000 is beautiful, so what does that tell you?
I'm certain that it
can write, and probably pretty well, but I'm just as certain that it would be uncomfortable to do so with all those stones digging into the webbing between thumb and index finger. And you sure can't post it!

Imagine the look on the Montblanc staff faces when they get this pen in for repair because the nib is scratchy and a slow starter.
BTW, will diamonds hold up better than "precious resin"?

What would Richard charge for tuning its nib?
I don't know. I am not a fan of red butterflies on my pens, and it would definitely have to post. So if you're thinking of getting me a present, I prefer this more modest Boheme:

And it posts!

Just a thought about the most expensive pen.
It was probably the quill that signed the Declaritory Act of 1766, since it cost England what is now the United States.

It would seem that MB went out to make the most expensive pen in the world although I could guess that a person could offer a pen. It is like any auto comapny and their very high end cars they are not made for to race alone but to get the name of the company out there. If it was not for the publicity would they have not created a more lower price pen so that many people could enter into the enjoyment of purchasing one and thus share the celebration?
