I just bought an Estie J from John and its wonderful but the nib is a little scratchy for my liking. It is a 2556 nib. I am looking for a smooth writing semi flexable nib. What would you all suggest for something that would fit this criteria? It will be used in either an Estie SJ or J. Thanks everyone :-)

Well, a little bit depends on what's making the nib you have seem scratchy. It could be that you need more flex or it could be that the 2556 needs some smoothing or the 2556 is worn out.

If you like the line width of the 2556, you might try a 9556 which should be smoother, but won't have any extra flex. A 2048 will give you additional flex, but might not be all that smooth. Before investing in a 2048 (which can be expensive), I'd suggest trying the 9556.

My 9556 is a nail - no flex at all. It's for "Fine Writing"

I used to have an Estie 9128 and liked it a lot. Smooth, not full-flex, but it had a nice degree of variation. The only reason I don't have it any more is because I made it a gift to someone I hold in high esteem. I think that's what you're looking for.

My 2556 nib has smoothed out but only when i write at a particular angle. I will look at the 9556 and 9128. Also if anyone has any nibs for sale let me know im interested in all Estie nibs really. I believe i am a dedicated Estie collector now :-)

Looked them both up.

9556 - $7.00

9128 - $47.50

You might also take a look at the 9048.

Depending on if Brian still has one or a few, he is selling 9128 nibs for $25 a piece, go to esterbrook.net and the nibs for sale section in the For Sale section of his website. You will have to email him to order/see if he still has one. Hope this helps!!

FYI: Brian is currently otherwise occupied and has almost no time for pen related endevours. He checks in periodically and will be back among the Esterbrooks in the future.

Now 50 seems a bit high for a 9128, even a NOS copy. I'd have put the value more in the $30-35 retail range with a good used one in the 15-18. I'd just watch E-Bay for a pen with the nib you want and roll the dice. Lots of good nibs have come to me this way. (Reminder to self: Stop giving away Esterbrook secrets...)
