I've had two Pilot 78Gs for a while, one fine one medium. I have trouble finding pens this fine that write so smoothly, so I really like them. The fact that they're cheap doesn't hurt!

I've noticed that I've been having pretty severe nib creep on my medium pen lately. I've only used Noodler's Luxery Blue in the pen. Is this common in the pen? For my next higher end pen purchase I was planning to choose a Pilot. Is this something I should worry about with a more expensive pen too?

I also use this ink in one of my Sheaffers, and I haven't had any nib creep like this.

I dont have experience with the pen, but I have noticed that noodler's ink is prone to nib creep.

Noodler's inks are very prone to nib creep. It depends on the ink and pen you use, as the waterproof/polar inks are more likely to creep.

Nib creep can affect any pen no matter their price. It is not a big problem, only a cosmetic one. If it bothers you, you can try out other inks that are not as susceptible to nib creep.

I do know that this ink is known for creeping, I've never experienced it to this degree though. I really like Noodler's inks, and I use them in the majority of my pens. At the moment, I have two pens inked with this exact ink, the Pilot and a Sheaffer Snorkel Statesman. The Sheaffer has some creep, but the Pilot has a ball of ink on the nib every time I take the cap off. The Sheaffer---and other pens, such as my 78G with a fine nib--- normally just have a drop or two.

When I decide to spend $110 on a pen
I'm seriously considering a Pilot Vanishing Point.

I like my 78G F, have read it mentioned favorably in discussions of various inks
and am impressed with ability to have selection of nibs for it as richardspens.com offers.
(no affiliation) Interchangeable nibs is one reason I bought Pelikan M200.

[as others have said, nib creep w/Noodlers doesn't necessarily indicate poor quality pen;
not a big problem and may not happen with another ink].

Have fun hunting pens and inks!

Have you tried another non-Noodler's ink in your 78G? So far Noodler's is the only ink I have had that promotes nib creep, and it does so with only certain pens. For example, I cannot use Noodler's in my Esterbrooks. But, it does quite well in a variety of other pens.

Buy the pen you want. You can only try to see if Noodler's presents a problem with the Pilot. If it does, there is a world of other great inks available.

can someone clarify the ink system used by the 78G?
I was of the impression that you can buy the 78G loaded with a CON-20 converter and thus I assume it uses Pilot cartridges. However, I think it was in the Marketplace where I saw a 78G for sale where it said it uses International cartridges.

Milo, I don't know about all 78Gs but the ones sold by the fellow in Canada (marketplace), do take the international cartridges, shorts for certain. I got two of them from him and they are great pens.

As for the nib creep with Noodlers/the 78G. I have several 78Gs and many of my Noodlers inks creep on any nib. I no longer care or try to do anything about it. Waste of a life. Doesn't hurt the nib and always looking for the positive... helps me remember what ink is in the pen.

These are really nice writing pens! Not certain why I bother with anything else.

I'm the Canadian currently selling those special 78G
http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=68304

I found a bunch of them in Europe and they were made to take a regular International cartridges. I don't know why, but it works. I found out that the Waterman converter is also a perfect fit.

If you are interested, just PM me.

I have experienced nib creep as well with the 78G, with FPN Galileo Brown ink that misterh sent me. With Diamine inks I did not get any nib creep, so I am quite certain that it is the ink and not the pen which is the problem. It doesn't bother me that much to be honest though it doesn't bode that well as I intend to use Bulletproof Black in one of my 78Gs en route from Samovar. The Galileo Brown shows some quite wicked nib creep, actually. But I still like my 78G!

As a sidenote, I have just inked up my orange Tombow with Navajoe Turquoise and have noticed absolutely no nib creep at all. I may try the bulletproof ink in that one to see if it is the ink and not the pen.

Another Noodler's user here. I can say most of them have some tendency to creep; the waterproof ones more than the others.

A note on the VP. An excellent pen. Ironically, nib smoothness is not as consistent as in its cheaper cousin (from a limited sample size of 3-4 of each.) Purchasing one from a nib expert is the way to go happyberet.gif
