Original Reform 1745

German Piston Filler

100% New/NOS

Note that the golden Reform badge in the photos is a removable sticker.

The Reform 1745 is a near mirror image of the Pelikan M120. It performs on the same level, is approximately the same size, and has the same aesthetic motif. All this, yet the 1745 commands a dramatically lower price.

Pelikan M120 shown below, alongside a 1745 for reference.

The Reform 1745 is a prudent choice. It blends value with performance, appealing to the uninitiated and experienced alike.

**

Regarding line width/nib gauge: 1745 nibs generally fall between fine and medium-fine.

**

For the sake of clarity, these Reforms are 100% new/NOS/never used, sealed in the factory boxes, and removed only when orders are being filled. They are available now, and shipped from within the continental USA for speed and security.

Price: 1 pen = $6.75; 2-4 pens = $6.25 each; 5-23 pens = $5.75 each; Sealed Factory Boxes of 24 = $135 (or about $5.63 each)

≈≈Tuning Service≈≈

Although these are great pens right out of the box, some nibs can be a little dry or scratchy. They’ve also been sitting for a number of years (hence, “new old stock”), and are stiff in a few areas (namely, the piston and feed). Some can overlook these shortcomings, but others demand only top performance. For them, I offer a tuning service.

Through much research and subsequent experience, I’ve become quite the effective Reform tuner. I can take the most finicky 1745 and turn it into a writer anyone can appreciate. I use only the best materials and tools.

With tuning, the ultimate goal is to provide a pen that writes, flows, and functions well (ie: the pen is “tuned up”). Note that this is not a full regrinding. For example, I cannot take a stock Reform nib and turn it into a cursive Italic. Although this is possible, it would require retipping of the pen, as the iridium material is ground off when making such drastic changes. I do not have the facilities to retip. Indeed, even Richard Binder outsources his retipping.

That said, you can provide me with basic requirements (ie: wet fine), which I can use as the foundation for your tuning. I can customize flow to whatever you’d like, but nib gauge is limited by what I start with (again, I’m only smoothing the nib, I’m not regrinding it). Feel free to request width’s between extra fine and medium. Nine times out of ten, I am able to match your requirements, but understand that I cannot give a 100% guarantee on nib gauge.

When tuning a 1745, I proceed in the following fashion:
  • The nib/feed assembly is removed and soaked in reverse osmosis/deionized water to remove storage wax/oils.
  • A minute amount of silicon grease is added to the piston mechanism to smooth it up.
  • The nib is returned to the pen, the pen is flushed with RO/DI water several times, and filled with ink. It is allowed to sit, inked, giving the ebonite feed enough time to absorb liquid and become supple after years of storage.
  • Flow, smoothness, and consistency are evaluated and adjusted, to the point where a pleasant and consistent writing experience is achieved.
  • The pen is subsequently allowed to sit overnight, inked, to verify that the modifications "took" and that there are no leaks or other issues.
  • After a final testing, the pen is thoroughly cleaned with RO/DI water, allowed to dry, and shipped off to its new owner, ready to write for a lifetime.
As is apparent, this is not a quick once-over. I strive to ensure that every pen I tune meets the exacting standards of its future owner.

Price: $5 per pen

Ink

Should you desire it, I can provide ink to accompany your pen at no extra charge. This is a vial-sized portion, and will yield 5+ refills in a 1745.

Please choose one of the following varieties:

Visconti Black
Noodler's Navy
Pelikan Blue-Black
Mont Blanc British Racing Green

As of 6/27, I also have two vials remaining of Rohrer and Klingner Alt Goldgrün, and one vial of Noodler’s Apache Sunset. Unless I post otherwise, assume that these are available.

Shipping

Your pens are shipped in sturdy shipping tubes and bubble wrap. Shipping is $3.00 within the continental US, up to four pens (up to three pens with ink). For every pen after four (or after three if you’re opting for ink), factor in an additional $0.10 per pen. Insurance and other services are optional, and quoted upon request.

International shipping begins at $5.00 to most locations.

Given the number of orders I receive, I have started shipping on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (as opposed to every day), so take that into consideration when calculating shipping times.

Ordering Process

I would rather deal only with active members who have five or more posts.

My preferred payment method is via PayPal. If you'd like to order, please send a private message, with your PayPal email address mentioned in the body, and an ink preference (if you'd like one). Also reply to this thread with a "PM sent" post, in the event that the PM system does not deliver the message, and/or my inbox is full and cannot process incoming mail.

For a number of reasons, it’s easier for me to send a PayPal invoice as opposed to receiving payment direct, which is why I request the PayPal email address. Once the invoice is sent, the pen is effectively held for 24 hours. If, in 24 hours, the invoice hasn't been paid, it will be canceled and I will send an invoice to the next buyer in line.

Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Received my pen in the mail today. Came in a large plastic tube just as described - no way in heck the pen can get damaged the way it is packed. The ink also arrived safely within the same tube. Tried out the pen, and it's currently the best writer I own as well as a beautiful piston filler and a great knock-around pen useful for eveyday service. 10/10!!

Only problem is that I'm considering buying more, but know I need to stop buying so many pens!

Many thanks!
JJBlanche
Glad to hear your pen was well received.

For those interested in acquiring one of their own, many more are still available.

Just an update for interested parties: the Alt Goldgrün and Apache Sunset are spoken for.

The Montblanc Racing Green is now out as well.

I've placed an order for more inks, but for several reasons had to submit via snail mail. So, by the end of next week you can expect fresh MB Racing Green and Herbin Vert Empire, in addition to the Visconti Black, Pelikan B-B, and Noodler's Navy that I already have. I'll post a new thread when the fresh inks arrive, but until then I'm limited to Visconti Black and Pelikan Blue Black.

Hi JJ:

Got my pens in the office mailbox. Thank you for the beautiful packing tube and the instructions. I am sure that I'll find them handy.

The alt goldgrun ink sample is very interesting indeed. I will probably order a bottle at some point. The pen does write very well and the piston filler is pretty smooth. I'd definitely recommend this pen to everyone considering buying.

Cheers.

I received my pen today. It's a great little pen and a very smooth writer for such a nice price. Shipping was fast and the pen was very well packed. I'd highly recommend this pen to anyone who is considering purchasing one.

I got four of these pens in the mail yesterday from JJ. I had one of them tuned. I haven't filled it with ink yet (mostly because I want it as a reference for a while), but it really does wonders to have the pen tuned. The other three aren't bad. The worst of the 3 is the one I started work on immediately. It's easing up with all the soaking and piston movement I have put it through, but it was pretty hard to turn at first. The other two feel like they just have minor hitches. They definitely all have a classic look about them and are worth well more than the cost (even with tuning). I'm glad to have a little project now trying to get the three untuned pens to work nearly as well as the tuned one.

The Reform pen arrived today, JJ, and she's a beauty. I'm on deadline, so don't have time yet to ink it up, but all looks well -- indeed, all looks great! Thank you again for offering it!

The tube package is a work of art all itself -- very painstaking and secure, and the inclusion of both ink and instructions is class all the way. I'm a happy customer.

Thank you again for the great deal -- the great pen, wonderful package, and accompanying bonus items. If I ever see you offering another item on Classifieds -- and I can afford it, both in mind and wallet -- I'll have no doubt that the transaction will be first-class all the way.

Take care of yourself. Have a wonderful Tuesday night!

Ah, mine has arrived! It took 18 days (!), but they have arrived. So- any of you folks who might be wondering if your Reform(s) have vanished into the USPS's ether closet take comfort in the fact that your pen(s) will likely show up. Eventually. biggrin.gif

For those ordering one now, I'd recommend buying at least one with JJ's smoothing out service. I didn't, but I've heard very good things- and I'm wishing I had! Not too bad without it, but I hear it makes a big difference.

Two questions, for either JJ or some other Reform enthusiast:

1. What's the deal with the removable nib? Can you buy replacements, other sizes, etc?

2. Is it wood that I see at the bottom of the nib/feed unit as a means of allowing in ink?

It took USPS 15 days to deliver my two Reforms, but at least they arrived safely --- JJ's secure shipping tube made sure of that smile.gif

JJ graciously accommodated my request for a tuned medium nib, and a tuned extra fine nib. The former is a very smooth writer, and the latter exhibits a surprising amount of flexiness... from extra fine up to medium width. The extra fine naturally has a touch of feedback. And the piston fillers work perfectly.

They are nice, small pens, and a steal for the price! thumbup.gif
