PM Sent for Pens

Ah, mine has arrived! It took 18 days (!), but they have arrived. So- any of you folks who might be wondering if your Reform(s) have vanished into the USPS's ether closet take comfort in the fact that your pen(s) will likely show up. Eventually. biggrin.gif

For those ordering one now, I'd recommend buying at least one with JJ's smoothing out service. I didn't, but I've heard very good things- and I'm wishing I had! Not too bad without it, but I hear it makes a big difference.

Two questions, for either JJ or some other Reform enthusiast:

1. What's the deal with the removable nib? Can you buy replacements, other sizes, etc?

2. Is it wood that I see at the bottom of the nib/feed unit as a means of allowing in ink?

Aaron

Aaron,

1.) The removable nib facilitates easy repair, which I believe is it's primary purpose. Back in Reform's day, there were probably many sizes, shapes, and grades of replacement nibs, but one is more or less limited to the stock nib these days. The only other Reform that one commonly sees is the Bremen, and it does not have a removable nib.

2.) Wood does not make up any part of this pen. The feed is ebonite, the nib is steel with the anti-corrosive tip material, and the barrel is plastic.

Regards,

JJ

Just recieved my "tuned" 1745 and can not believe the professional level of service. First, the pen writes like a dream so tuning was well worth the little bit extra money compared to a factory stock 1745 (have two of them). Secondly, there are two pages describing operation and basic troubleshooting/problem solving. This is more information than I got with my Pelikan M800. Then there is the free sample of ink. Nice touch. As though this were not enough the pen is shipped in a tube container that even the postal handlers couldn't destroy.

Great service at a great price. This is a marketing system the pen industry should be using.

Disclaimer: Not related or salaried. Just a very impressed consumer. clap1.gif

As of now, I'm out of Visconti black, and don't plan to reup on that (although I'll probably grab some Pelikan Brilliant Black). Still waiting for the USPS (or is it Pony Express?) to get the new supply of inks here. In the mean time, I have Pel B-B and Noodler's Navy, both of which are great inks.

I'm glad everyone is please with their pens. These really are great little writers, especially when given a bit of tuning.

What kind of tuning do you recommend for owners of one of the 1745s you're selling that haven't been tuned by you? Both of my 1745s are way past dry writers- neither of them will write at all unless I am pressing very hard. It doesn't seem to be the feed/ink setup- ink flow seems consistent and the nib seems smooth enough if I apply a constant amount of pressure, though that pressure is pretty excessive.

What's the diagnosis, doc? Should I be going for some tine spreading?

Moral of the story? Spring for JJ's tuning if you want pens that write out of the box. biggrin.gif

I'm happy to report that the first untuned pen I filled seems to have worked very nicely through its first fill of Waterman Black (it just seemed the appropriate very safe/known quantity ink for the task). It's getting low now and will get a nice flushing before something else is put into it probably some time next week.

I have filled the second of the three untuned pens now after giving it a soak. The piston on it is running nearly as well as the tuned pen. The nib seems smoother than the first pen, but the flow isn't quite as good at this point.

I'm sorely tempted to buy more of these pens, but 4 should be quite enough. If I bought as many of every pen as I desired, I'd be an even bigger pen glutton than I am now.

Let me add another hurrah for these pens and for the seller.

The communication from the seller is absolutely great. The packaging of the pens includes a tube with the pens well wrapped and even directions on troubleshooting the pen.

The pens that are tuned (all I have) write great and the pistons work well. Truly a great pen for the price.

The new ink shipment has arrived. In addition, a few minor things have changed regarding policy and pricing. As such, a new thread has been started (click here to go there). For the purposes of ordering, please refer to the new thread. This will be my last post in this thread. Anything Reform 1745 related should be addressed in the new thread, or via PM to me directly.

JJ- any general tips on what kind of work I might need to do on my 1745s? Both need to be mashed to write, I did flush with water a few times when I first got them, then flushed with some Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black before loading that ink back into it. The pistons work great, but unless you're really pressing down you get no ink.

thanks! Aaron

Got the pen today Justin. It's great and the packaging and "handmade" brochure are really nice touches. Really sweet little pen. I tend to favor broad nibs and big barrels and this is a great change of pace. Works and writes "a treat" as the Brits say.

Thanks!

I received my pens today, and they are wonderful... the flow is perfect, the nib is very smooth with a hint of feedback (on copy paper!), and the piston action is smooth and very light! Even smoother than my Pelikans!

Now I feel like I should buy more...
