Full Version: Where to get a Sheaffer Snorkel Statesman filler repaired?

Ahoy! Subject has the main idea- I ran into a Sheaffer Snorkel Statesman. It's in fine enough condition, but (not surprisingly) the sac is kaput. Oddly enough, it seems the other parts are still OK- when I accidentally poked a hole in the brittle ink sac, it began to fill, though leaking out the bottom if it was turned nib-up. Not meant to be used in that way, but I had to try it, as it was able to shoot water a good meter after that little whole was poked.

I considered repairing it myself, but the parts seem to be about as costly, if not more, as the service as provided by various folks, at least in the US. My first babe (a boy) was just born, though for some reason I thought I'd have some time on my hands during my week off, but what my grandmother said about how much infants sleep flies in the face of the rapidly filling diaper bag. I purchased it with the intent to get it working for my younger sister, who just graduated college.

I guess I'm looking for recommendations for who could repair this for a smaller fee. No favors being asked for, just curious who might be the most economical and/or the most available repair person. It looks like $30 is what folks like Mr. My Favorite Pen charge, which would be just fine. What kind of turn around can I expect from most fountain pen repair gurus?

As an aside- on these white dotted models, can one use the lifetime warranty? I mean, it seems like one should, but I wouldn't be surprised if one couldn't- or if the "shipping" fees were very expensive.

Thanks much!

Aaron

Lifetime warranty only applied to the original owner, which you are not. By the time that Sheaffer closed their factory and service center in Ft. Madison, they were charging a flat $50 fee to repair these pens.

Make sure that whomever repairs the pen for you replaces the point holder gasket AND the 0 ring in the barrel in addition to the sac. There is simply no reason not to do this as part of the restoration, but some will skip the step to save time and parts if they are "working." But you'll be back sooner than later to have them done too....

BTW, only three of us can do the repair with Sheaffer, not after market parts. i.e. the parts that Sheaffer was using when they shut down the repair center back in March.
