Hi everybody~ this is my first post.

I just discover this forum last week and based on people's recommendations,
I just bought my first fountain pen(s)

Pelikan M200 FINE
Lamy Vista EXTRA FINE
Pilot 78G FP Black FINE

and 3 bottles of noodlers ink.

The problem is --my handwriting is just horrible. Back when I was in college and graduate school, I've almost never taken any notes
in class. The hand reason being that it'll take me so much time to decipher my notes, I'd make better use of my time deciphering what's going
on in the textbook.

So I've been searching online on how to improve one's hand writing. Specifically, I want to learn how to write pretty cursive style.
I can write each individual letters, but when I write a sentence, I can't connect them nicely. Any tips?

Welcome to FPN.

Thats a nice choice of pens you have there............my handwriting itself is nothing to speak of, so I will leave it to our other members !

Some of them write beautifully.

Welcome to FPN! The first thing you should do when you write is to sloooooow doooown. Do that for a while, making sure that you write as well as you can. Once you've gotten the hang of it, you will see that you write better when you speed up again.

There are many cursive systems, so which one do you want to learn?

Great first selection of fountain pens! thumbup.gif

Hi and welcome.
I can't promise you anything but here goes...
Try out a nib in M or B. These may help you slow down a bit and your writing might improve (well, maybe). Compare caps capped (posted) and unposted: sometimes that can increase the balance and/or comfort and/or speed.

Well? Hmmm?

Welcome to FPN!

You've gotten good advice already (slow and to try various pen and positions) thus I'll offer some encouragment! Like you I have horrible handwriting some pen definitively helps while other hurt. I prefer smoother nibs but my handwriting is significantly better with nibs that gives feedback. So that's another avenue to try.

Worse comes to worse, if you dont enjoy your handwriting your pen will divert your look wink.gif

Your handwriting I bet will be improving by the day from now on smile.gif I have been so motivated to practice every day since I joined this network

Greetings and welcome! If you practice, you will improve. The suggestion to slow down is a good one. smile.gif

After being in a meeting where my handwriting was compared to a 3rd graders I went to library and checked out a book on caligraphy. I studied the different styles and choose one to practice on. Go back to bone head practice of each letter and then start building words and sentences. Going slow will help but you've got to put in the time relearning the fundamentals if you want really good handwriting. I must say after the practice some one saw a memo on my desk and could not believe I had written it. smile.gif

Can I inquire which book it was? It would certainly benefit me wink.gif

Folks check out FPN's Penmanship Forum, has a lot of good info there.
As far as books are concerned, I was recommended a book called "Write Now" by Barb Getty and inga Dubay, published by Portland state Univ Press. it is available from Pendemonium.

Welcome to the obsession! What part of Kansas? There are a few of us fp folks in the state, most seem to be in the east but there are a few of us out in the hinterlands.

Good choice of pens, by the way. The Pelikan 200 is perhaps the most reliable pen you'll own, regardless what else you buy.

Good luck and have fun.

I'm from (a southern suburb of)kansas city.
I like living in Kansas, everything is relatively cheap, people are nice, no traffic jam, etc etc.

Go Jayhawks!

Well, you're certainly not in the hinterlands of Kansas! Our daughter and her family live in Overland Park and our son is in Lawrence at the present time, so we get back that way fairly frequently - any excuse to visit our granddaughter.

You've undoubtedly discovered The Pen Place in the Crown Center Shops. If not, stop by there and talk with Lee - he has a wealth of fp knowledge and is a gentleman to boot. There is also a pen club that meets outside the shop on a regular basis, although I can't remember the exact schedule - Lee would know. Or contact Dennis Bowden who is a member here and posts frequently as Dennis B. He operates Parkville Pen and is, I think, the president of the club.

Have fun with the obsession.

Wow. I live in overland park and I was living in Lawrence a year a ago.

I'm still a newbie in the world of fp. So I didn't know the existence of that Pen Place.
I have quite a few hobbies like photography, chess etc. but I am not expert in any of them.
when I was a kid i had to do(being forced to) calligraphy. (chinese calligraphy, under chinese educational system) That time my hand writing is better than now even though I am like 3 times older. But I forgot how to write lots of the chinese characters so I am thinking to pick up calligraphy again but this time not being forced to do so and this time write in english.
