Full Version: Describe the Red Pelikan Body

In some online pictures it looks burgandy. In others it looks like a bright red. Which is it? Can you supply an accurate picture.
penmanila
i have one (and love it; it's one of my daily writers); i wouldn't say it's bright red, although it gleams because of the striped "pearlescent" finish. here's a pic i took of it on top of a vacumatic oversize and a standard vac, both in burgundy red, so you can see the difference. it certainly looks brighter compared to the vacs, but that's because the vacs have an almost violet-brown deepness to them.

I have a M600 red. The red looks different depending on the light. You can rotate the pen in your hand and see the different shades of red.

My color perceptions are poor. I agree that "pearlescent" describes this color, and I would characterize it as a medium red - not dark burgundy, not bright red. I also think Juan is correct that the color does seem to transform in different light. I think in keeping with the conservative nature of the Souverain series, this red can be considered conservative.

here's yet another shot of my M800, set off against other pens:

(again, i feel that its red is brighter under the light than it actually is in plain daylight.)

What are the first and third (from the left) pens?

edit: (or from the top, whichever you prefer)

These are two Faber Castell. The third is an Emotion Wood. I don't know the name of the first one: maybe "Classic Guilloche"?

A nice German make.

Thanks. I love the top one.
penmanila
yes, it is indeed a faber-castell guilloche. a very nice writer.

Definitely wouldn't call it "burgundy" but agree that it varies from medium red to deep red depending on light. Quite a lovely color that I thought I wouldn't like until I saw it IRL.

Great, when will it end?

Just when i thought purchasing my new green M1000 would cure me of my Pelikan sickness I now see those pics of the red M800 and want one, and maybe a blue one too!!!

I already got two M400s, four M200s and an M1000 and now am craving two M800s. When will it end? crybaby.gif Man, once one Pelikan ands on your desk the rest of the flock sure does accumulate pretty fast thumbup.gif

My blue M600 has pretty much the same characteristics used here to describe the red, only in blue. Medium, rich blue, darkening to deep blue and lightening to bright blue in flashes as the light angle changes. I actually thought I didn't like the blue based on pictures, and had ordered the green, but I got the wrong one through a mischance, and liked it so much I had to keep it.

So now I just need to complete the set. 2 more 600s, probably - one red, one green. smile.gif

this is now OT, but since a couple of you seem really interested, take a look here for more info and more pics (of even yummier colors than black):

http://www.pensfromheaven.com/pens_luxury_...l_Guilloche.htm

here's another look at that baby, which i got in paris some years ago. (do some googling for "faber castell guilloche" and you'll see how you can get it for a lot less than the prices quoted in the link above.)

back to regular programming! wink.gif here's another look at the M800 from nibs.com:

and you'll find more glorious pictures of M800s and M805s in various colors here:

enjoy (and suffer) !

Does anyone have a blue one they can post a picture of?

I think if I owned an 800 and a 1000, my sickness might end! 1000 would have to be in green for the traditional look.

Never thought it'd grow on me, but as I stare more, the green look just seems absolutely perfect.

Darn it! I only have a green striated M800 and a "cross-checked" M215 and my nexty is likely an M 320. So I now see that I can't avoid more M-colours. Or as put above, where will it all end? Hmm??

I came withing a hair's breadth of buying the green M200 Richard Binder had for sale - but by the time I talked myself into it, he had sold it. Probably for the best.
lapis
I had one in my hand and it was bright red, about as bright a read as the green straited consisted of a bright green which I have (if I may say so).
My Parker 51 is burgundy and totally different. Yes, Parker is not Pelikan. But for me, burgundy is not only a very much darker red, but it also is somewhat brownish and purplish. Maybe like a bit of pluminess in there.

I'm glad to see other people are noticing the difference in brightness, as I thought I was the only one smile.gif

From what I've seen, the older, striped Pelikans have bright, solidly colored stripes. A few years ago, the material changed, and the stripes became variegated (dark with some bright areas) and pearlescent. Most of the Pelikans I have are of the older variety, but one of my M400s is of the newer variety, and the difference in the material is pronounced. Thus, in my opinion, the differences in photos you've seen online aren't caused so much by differences in the way the photos are taken as by a difference in the actual material of the pen. All the pens posted in the thread so far seem to be of the newer, pearlescent variety, except for the one penmanila posted, which seems to be of the older variety with solid stripes.

I have a strong preference for the older variety, as I feel the newer variety feels cheap in comparison, whereas the older stuff feels more solid... or it could simply be my mind smile.gif Additionally (and I've mentioned this in two or three other posts, so I hope I'm not becoming repetitive) the newer variety has pockets of air between the outer, striped sleeve and the inner sleeve, creating large, foggy patches in the pen's translucency.

That being said, if you like pearlescent finishes, you needn't pay attention to me!

I had mentioned in another thread that I would take a few pictures comparing an old pen and a new one, but I've yet to get around it...
