Now that I am spolied by Pels and Sailors, what happens if I find a pen that I love the looks of but the nibs are not known for their smoothness? Can a professional nibmeister take a so-so 14k or 18k nib and smooth it out for me or must I have it stubbed or a new nib made entirely? Second question. Can a modern nib be worked so that it becomes semi-flexible or flexible? Help me out here.

Hi,
We can of course smoothen it out.

Hi Robert,
Just to add to Dillo's comment: smoothing can always be done, and some modern nibs can be made into semi-semi-flexible or semi-flexible nibs. It is easier with 14 K than with nibs containing more gold, and the larger a nib is, the easier it is. This is specialist work, however. I think Richard Binder and John Mottishaw can do this for you if you want it done, and they'll be able to tell you whther they will be able to tackle a specific nib or whether it is worthwhile doing at all.
HTH, warm regards, Wim
