Short story, I've into possession of the this interesting set at the all in price of $57.50.

Oh yeah, it's not a Vac Filler....

Yep, it's a stubby Golden Arrow.
Shangas
What kind of filling-mech?

Actually, I probably could use even the pencil alone.

That is where the ring inserts into ringtop Vacs. Often the rings are lost. Vacs were unusual in that the ring could rest flat against the pen.

Sweet...

Congratulations!

I have a sudden craving for a ringtop Vac.

One day I think I'd like to buy myself a small gold ringtop fountain pen of some kind. Perhaps a Duofold.

The Vacs there look really nice. I like the nib-detail with the golden arrow. I wish Parker still used the golden arrow on it's fountain pens. I like it.

Ringtop Vacs are not common. I'd venture the guess Vacs are the only vintage pen for which ring-top outprices clip.

Ringtops do have their charms though.

That even beats my sumgai story of buying a black junior vacfiller for $21.40 at a(now closed)antique store down here.....

Think I'd better stop staring now.

I posted this last night when I was pretty tired and really omitted as Paul Harvey would say - the rest of the story.

The set arrived wrapped in paper towels. Something happened to them between the picture you see above and when I unwrapped them. The paper towels were stuck to them. I pealed off most of it, but was left with paper towel fibers all over them. I tried every safe solvent I could lay my hands on before I realized that the towel fibers were pressed into the plastic.

It looks like the paper towel might have had vapors of a solvent like acetone in it. Where pressed against the pen & pencil, some towel fibers actually embedded into the plastic.

I’m in the process of cleaning them up now, and the pen will be a 95% success. Fortunately, the area with the imprint on the pen was unaffected. Though light, it is complete and is labeled GOLDEN ARROW.

The pencil was worse. It will turn out OK, but the imprint is fuzzy with fibers and I’m taking a breather on it as I decide how aggressively to attack it. The pencil’s imprint is PARKER not GA. The lack of GA imprint might indicate these weren’t a matched set. But based on similarities of the plastic & hardware, I’d going to say these two were a matched pair from day one.

Sad that a rare set was reduced from excellent condition to merely very good.

I’ll post some pictures this weekend of the de-toweled duo.

Cheers!

Very nice. If you don't mind, what is that large-ish pearl & black marbled affair in the middle? It's got a great look to it!

I think that might be a Triad pen, have never seen one in person but it sure is pretty.

Good on you for the Golden Arrow. I recently purchased a stubby Vacuumfiller as well, but for much more than your set. I still felt like a sumgai though.

Actually I love the little stubby pens, they are really nice to write with. Mine has a wonderful 2 tone nib that is butter smooth medium on one side and super smooth XF on the other.

Cheers,
Sean

It is a triad, a three sided pen with blunted edges. Rare pen. Small make. Highly sought as most have broken caps from folks trying to unscrew an ununscrewable cap. The ringtop in that pic i believe is Alan Hirsh's. A neat pen.

Here is a monster Triad.

Neat! How about the blue-green ringtop on the very right?

Carter's, in a very uncommon and uncatalogued plastic.

I have never seen a ringtop triad, that is pretty cool.

Phil,

I really didn't have time to give anything but the very abridged version. What happened was back in 2005 I found an
antique store not too far from work and previously had gone in there a couple of Saturdays looking for fountain pens.
I passed up the Vacfiller twice because I didn't want another black f/p. The third time, however,I relented and decided
to look at it. hen I saw the Vacfiller inscription I mentally sucked in my breath and took it over to the store owner. I
was expecting the possibility of a very expensive price. He said,"Hmmm...it's a Parker. I'll have to look in my book.".
He opened his book and looked in it for a moment, then said,"It's $20.00.". County tax @ .07% made the total $21.40.

What makes the story all the more interesting is the fact that down here in Florida such finds are extremely rare,
considering that this is a tourist state and--especially in Tampa--the so-called antique stores really don't have a lot
when it comes to vintage fountain pens.

David, please to be identifying certain ringtops for me, specifically...

- Fifth from left.
- Little gold one (uncapped) above the word 'pen'.
- Third from right.

They all look really fancy!
