Full Version: Talk me out of wanting a Pelikan!

Don't do it! You would hate the smooth nibs, solid construction, and hefty ink reserve. The slight springiness of the gold nibs would be anathema to you.

Hey Val,
For around $100-$125, you can pick up a good condition vintage 400NN brown tortoise off FleaBay (green tortoise ones go slightly cheaper). I love the look of those pens and you get vintage Pelikan quality with them. Plus, you can swap in nibs with these (the M200 nibs do best). It's a great way to get going with a Pelikan and then later on find a gently used Place de la Concorde for a cheaper price in the marketplace or FleaBay when you feel it's time. But if the knitbug really has the Pelikanbug hard, no sense in leaving yourself for wanting--get the Concorde. Penguinmaster is making an offer that is VERY difficult to refuse (read his last post in his thread!).

No, don't do it. Go buy one of those bling-y ballpoint pens instead.

Besides - Nobody uses fountain pens anymore ...

Vintage Pelikans are beautiful writers!

If you really want the Place de la Concorde, get it. You will be unhappy with any other Pelikan only because it is not the Place de la Concorde - no matter how good the pen performs.

If it is not necessarily the Place de la Concorde, consider a vintage 400. The vintage tortoise are much more beautiful than the modern ones. The green ones are closer to the modern pens. I have many Pelikans and I prefer the vintage Pels because of their nibs and the tortoise because of their binde, too.

Don't do it! [Just ignore the fact I've got a bid in on one on ebay right now.......]

I'm thinking about selling my White Tortoise . . . but wait . . . not because I don't like the pen itself or the way it writes, but the barrel diameter feels too thin to me. I haven't measured, but the pen "feels" thinner than my "51" demi, though in reality I'll bet they're the same diameter. But, alas, I'll probably replace the pen with another Pelikan, perhaps a M805; I'll have to sell my MB 149 to do it. Maybe vintage?

So, once the Pelikan bug bites, watch out! Details aside, Pelikan makes a great pens. My apologies to your soon to be addiction.

I thought that Fleabay was another nickname for Ebay, but now I'm wondering if they are different? I googled it but the main URL is down... Could there really be a separate auction site that deals with vintage and antique items only? Oh, I hope I hope I hope I hope I hope ! cloud9.gif

Anyhoo, I find the brown vintage tortoises to be absolutely gorgeous! I thought they were in the $300-$400 range though, so I wasn't looking much. Now I'm keeping my eyes pealed for both kinds!

Or you can just call Pam Braun for a quote or go to www.pengallery.com or melspens.com for great bargains on Pelikans
