Full Version: Modifying Sailor Convertors

I recently acquired a Sailor Profit 21k from a forum member. It's a nice pen, but right now I'm using it with cartridges, and I strongly prefer to use bottled ink. It did not come with a converter, and the member told me that he tried putting a Sailor convert in it, but it rubbed against the barrel when he screwed it back on. Has anyone tried modifying a Sailor converter by hacking a bit off the end to prevent this?

I've never actually seen a Sailor converter, and I'd like to know how feasible this is before I buy one. If this doesn't work out, I'm stuck refilling cartridges.

Thanks!

That sounds strange to me: I have two Sailor Profit (both in the small size) and both carry regular Sailor converters. Are you sure he did not refer to a Sailor ProGear mini? In that case, it may be...

Cheers,

Never tried to hack the end off the converter,

you can fill the cartridge with bottled ink, all you need is a syringe, or a plastic transfer pipet.
peartreepens sells a refill kit, and also has a ink sampler deal.
or you can get a free tranfer pipette here,

http://www.perf-sci.com/d_transfer/TP02-3100.html

there is a link for a free sample on the above website.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought I read the converters did not hold as much ink as the cartridges anyways.

So, I found the original letter he enclosed with the pen (which is also a small). He said, "Sailor converters CAN fit inside it, BUT they drag on the barrel as you replace it, which causes the plunger to move, and usually results in an ink expulsion from the nib." Is it possible this was a bunk converter? Maybe I should go ahead and order one to try out...

Converters may not hold as much ink as a cartridge (I'm not sure), but it's easier to refill from the bottle than to refill a cartridge. I use converters in most of my pens, and I prefer them. Hey, different strokes for different folks! smile.gif

Very true........one of the many beauties of Fountain pens.

There is something for everyone.

smile.gif I did learn that lesson the hard way! All you'd need to do is buy a regular Sailor converter and file the texture off the black part on the end, reducing the diameter just a slight bit.

Other options that immediately jump into mind include a syringe to refill the carts with bottled ink. The Sailor converters hold a little more than half as much ink as a cart, so refilling carts will allow you to go longer in between fillups.

Thanks, that is what I will do. smile.gif I'm glad this is on the public forum now, in case anyone else with a similar problem searches for this in the future.

Knowledge wants to be free!

When you get your converter, make sure I'm not crazy by trying it in the pen (empty), and see if it drags.

I will do that, but in order to amortize the shipping cost I probably won't order until I have a few other things I need.
