I've been taught how to make that before, though, from what i was told, you should use Skimmed Milk.
Using milk with a fat content may trap fat bubbles within the plastic which will acidify over time, discoloring the plastic, and potentially making it brittle.
Using skimmed milk will apparently make for a harder, whiter, more durable and more stable product.
Also, i vaguely remember using rennet instead of vinegar which can be found in specialty food markets. Something about the vinegar being acidic and discoloring the plastic in the long run....i'm not sure though.
Also, when i was taught to make this, we made large blocks of the plastic for machining purposes by using a mold and a press. I would think you would easily be able to create turning rods out of the casein by taking a pvc pipe and cap, a wooden dowel that just fits in the pipe and a piece cheesecloth. First drill holes into the pvc cap. Then place the cheese cloth, doubled over the end of the pipe and cap it. Fill the pipe with the wet casein then plunge the dowel into the pipe until as much water is removed as possible. I'd dry it in the tube for a bit then remove the cap and push the casein out with the dowel to air dry.
