The pen arrived in excellent condition for a used pen. The pen measures 14.7 cm capped. The finish is excellent. There is a little micro-depression on the blind cap which I have smoothened with polishing cream.

Design, Size, and Weight 4.75/5.00

The pen has simple design and does not warrant too much attention from non fountain pen users. In my opinion, the design is very traditional. A very positive point is that the cap takes about 0.75 turn to uncapped. The cap sits snugly when tightened. The size is good. I like the weight of the pen (not too light nor too heavy).

Nib Design and Performance 4.75/5.00

The nib is 18k EF. The nib is big, which is what I like. The nib arrived in M nib, which is very wet and writes a line too thick for my liking. After the exchange at Chartpak (thanks, Chartpak for the super fast exchange), the EF nib (which writes like a F nib) is also a wet and smooth writer (although not as smooth or wet as a M nib). The nib is slightly flexible.

Filling System 5.00/5.00

The pen is a piston-filler, with a window to see how much ink is left. I read that the piston parts are made of brass, and the parts should last a long time.

Value 4.50/5.00

I bought it for $255 including shipping. It did not come with the original paper and box.

Conclusions 23.75/25.00

I am not really keen about Pelikan pens in general. I have a M400 Honey White pen which I seldom use. I have also sold other smaller Pelikan pens after I have bought them for less than 2 months. The main reason for selling is to get funds for other pens, and not because they do not write well. In fact, they are good writers, just that I am not hooked to them. I read a lot about the rave reviews of M1000 pens, and this M1000 pen has been one of my favorite pens. Hopefully, it will stay with me for a long time.

I think to say " ... the nib is big ..." is an understatement. I think the nibs are huge, and I agree fully about the loving them part. I have said often that I do not really write with my M-1000's, I draw or paint my letters and I have a great time doing it. I have a M nib and two B nibs with which I use J. Herbin inks most of the time. The nib widths allow the Herbin inks to shine, producing lovely water color lines.

I also love the size of the pen itself. It is a far cry from the smaller Pelikans, but it is less comfortable to carry about town. I find the shape and balance to be perfect for me. I also consider the style to be wonderfully conservative and timeless.

I think you got your pen for an excellent price. Congrats! I hope you enjoy your 1000 for many years.

I will buy myself a m1000 because it is a very high quality pen. Enjoy yours.

In your MB 146 review you compared the 146 to 149. I have an M620 (Picadilly) and I am considering purchasing either an M800 or M1000. I would be curious to know if you considered purchasing the M800 and if so why you chose the M1000 instead?

Wow, beautiful pen and great review. I have many Pelikans but none larger than the 600 series. One of my 400s is the blue striped one. It's such a pretty pen. How does one decide which color to get next?

It is a bit funny how I came to acquire this pen from eBay.

I bought another pen (Sheaffer Valor) from the same seller. Then I happened to see that the seller was selling this M1000 with an option for best offer to be submitted. Since this is the largest Pelikan and I have read so many positive reviews about the pen, I thought there is no harm to enter a low bid. I entered $232, and got it. So, including shipping, I paid about $240. I made a mistake saying this was bought for $255. I made a few pens of this price range recently and I got confused.

So there isn't a choice of me to choose between M800 or M1000. But given a choice, I would choose the bigger pen if the price difference between the pens is not significant. It is my personal preference for big pens, although I am an Asian with average-sized hands.

I see one of these in my future for sure, I am sure I would already have one if they made a blue or red one... Does anyone know if they ever will? Or is this a pipe dream?

My feeling is that they will no.I dont think this pen is sold in high volume as it is a big pen and only nuts like us like it so I think it will stay black/black and green/black.For me I never really cared too much,I love there grenn,blue and red.I just need to focus more on this pen and not dream on other.
