Full Version: Safe but effective way to clean inside Sheaffer flat-top cap?

Good Morning:

Just picked up a pretty little jade radite 5-30 ring top at a garage sale yesterday. Cleaned the nib/feed with a good soaking/rinsing in water, and tried wet Q-tips (about three dozen) to clean inside cap. Still, there seems to be a layer of almost solid, comes-off-in-flakes ink on the inside walls of the cap before reaching the inner cap. Am hesitant to use anything stronger for fear of doing harm.

Will a 1:10 ammonia/water on a Q-tip work, or will it harm the jade? Any other tips? (I do not have an ultrasonic cleaner.)

Thanks in advance!

(By the way-- anyone know the sac size for this pen offhand? Total capped length is
4 1/2." Thanks again!)

OK-- I did some research here (which I should have done first, of course) and decided to go ahead with a 1:10 ammonia solution and Q-tips. Helped quite a bit, then I thoroughly rinsed with plain old water and let dry completely.

I find that one can usually get a lot out putting a bit of water in the cap and then going at it with a paper towel twisted into a point and then turned around the cap with a bit of pressure. It's a good first step, at any rate, something I do to pretty much all pens that come my way.
