One of my pens came in with this beautiful 9788 nib that I would love to get working but after six days of soaking in room temp water and a forcing water through both the breather hole and the ink feed, it does not suck, not even air. There can't be that much that can go wrong in one of these, why do I feel so stupid? Any thoughts?

All too often, these flexible nibs have been used with india ink. Soaking in KOH-I-NOOR Rapido-Eze will usually clear them.
Might not be the problem, but it's worth a try.

I have two nibs (non-Esterbrook) doing the same thing so I will be interested to know how this turns out.

My local art store/ pen shop did not have any koh-i-noor cleaner but I did order some which is supposed to come in on wednesday. So I will report back on my findings. My feelings at this point are that Toulouse is right about the india ink thing, as I continue to soak the nib I occasionally get larger chunks of ink out of it but not the water coloring dissolved ink that I am used to. I'll update as I get more info.

As you can clearly see, this pen is not meant for you smile.gif Just mail it to me please smile.gif smile.gif
Seriously now, I have found that several renew points need to be disassembled and hand cleaned.
I know that we had posted the procedure around the forum 2-3 times, anyone knows where it is?

I have only ever had a few that didn't show some improvement after a session in the ultrasonic cleaner with a weak ammonia solution.

PS. Anyone else been stalking that rather untidy looking green Visumaster on the well known auction site? Unfortunately the seller is a "US only" fan and doesn't respond to my pleas for clemency. Ah well, it is the middle of winter here and still over 20 degrees celsius, so its not all bad.

Jim,

Don't feel bad. I'll make sure it doesn't sell for a sumgai, I don't have this one. I won't get it but someone will pay what I figure it is worth to fill a blank in the collection.

Todd

EDIT: Well I'm not the only one that needed it. I wasn't even close. Congratulations to whomever the high bidder was. Now, should I consider selling one...

Yeah, I'm sorry but $271 is crazy for a probably non cleanable section on that green one... I'm soooooo glad that mine flew under the radar...

P.S. it's not the nib from that pen, it's actually from a safari...

Adam,
Related point question. I don't think I have ever seen the jewels on a Visumaster like yours. Would you please post some photos ?

Unfortunately Brian's photos at esterbrook.net do not show the jewels clearly.

Much obliged if you could assist.

Okay i have my koh-i-nor and I am cleaning away. How long do I leave the nib and section in there?
Firefyter-Emt
Hey Adam, if that does not work for you, I have a couple spare feeds. If you send it my way I can swap the steel onto a new feed and collar for you. (n/c) cool.gif

Adam, I had one that soaked for 3 days before it would draw anything through it and it still needed to have the cleaning solution drawn through it multiple times before it cleared completely. What worked for me was after it started to clear, I drew the cleaning solution into the nib and let it sit for an hour or so, rinsed and repeated over and over. I'd just about given up when it finally came clean.
